Helpful revision tips
Exams are just around the corner and just because school or college is nearly over doesn’t mean you should stop studying! Here are some helpful revision tips to set in place during your revision timetable to ensure you get those grades you’ve been working towards for two years and get working on your revision techniques, too!
The Early bird really does catch the worm!
Start revising early, you are the only person that knows how much they have to learn and the time you have to do it in! Don’t start a week before the exam, we suggest at least one month beforehand!
Pretty is not pink
Do not spend ages making your notes look pretty! This is literally a massive time waster. Colour coding notes can help, for example, having a certain area or subject in one colour can help you remember later, but you don’t need to write the entire textbook out in bubble writing so your revision notes look ‘attractive’ to the eye! But this doesn’t work both ways either; don’t use more than three colours because then your brain won’t be able to relate the right information to the right colour! Remember, you’re not producing a work of art – just notes!
Take short breaks
Take a break every hour at least – and ensure you don’t revise for over three hours straight as you will have an overload. Schedule a daily timetable including breaks, and never have a break for longer than 20 minutes unless its for a meal. Also, set it for the majority of the day but leave time in the evening or afternoon to relax and put your feet up – nobody can work like a robot for 24 hours a day!
Use the guides
Use the correct revision guides, updated versions and helpful websites during your revision. Using a mixture can help you learn the information in different formats. If there is a movie that will help your A-Level revision then watch it! But remember it is study time!
Wake up early
Set up a schedule, where you wake up the same time every day and go to bed the same time every night – and plan it around your exam timetable too. If you wake up at 1 pm every day during study leave, but all your exams are at 9 then your body and mind will get into an awful habit that may affect you during exam season. Wake up early, work for most of the day with regular breaks, and then have an early night
You can create quick tests yourself, or take mock tests at home to see how your progress is going along. Get a loved one or a friend to mark them so the results are unbiased! Over time you should see an improvement in your results!
Prepare your study time
Have your drinks and snacks ready where you are so you don’t have to keep getting up and finding excuses to not revise! But don’t fill yourself with horrible sugary snacks that will raise your blood sugar, as then it will crash and you’ll feel awful! Brain food such as green vegetables and fish are great for studying!
Sit somewhere comfortable, preferably a desk where you are able to have everything you need around you and support yourself (your back etc.) in the right way. If you are crouching, slacking or laying down then these positions won’t be suitable for hours worth of revising! Also, your mind will associate your bed or sofa to other things such as television and sleep!
Don’t lie to yourself!
Lastly, this is very important and includes procrastination – when you tend to do other things instead of studying and have to cram in all the information at the last minute in hopes something will stick in your brain! If you are not pushing yourself hard enough or revising as much as you should then you simply won’t get the grades!
