  University Summary

About this University

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry is a school that focuses on the primary teachings of magic. The school dates back to around the 9th or 10th century (An exact founding date is unknown) and was founded by the most learned witches and wizards of the ages Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff, all of which are immortalised in the school’s houses which are named after the four founders.

The school is thought to be located somewhere in the mountains of Scotland, although an exact location has yet to be established, owing to the school being “unplottable”, in fact, if a “muggle” were to look directly at Hogwarts, they would see only ruins and several warnings of danger, it is also impossible to apparate or disapparate within the school’s grounds.

The school has a host of facilities open to students, such as sports, with the houses competing for the Inter-House Quidditch Championship. There are a number of different landmarks on site too including the black lake which is home to the beloved giant squid and to an enormous forest, which is referred to by faculty members as the Forbidden Forest, as it is out of bounds to students.

The school has ties to many different magical institutions around the world including Beauxbatons Academy of Magic in France and the Durmstrang Institute for Magical Learning, (Although an exact location of the institute is unknown, rumoured to be in the far north, owing to the student’s thick winter clothes), in fact the three schools took part in the 1994 Triwizard Tournament, although after the tragedy of the tournament that took place that year, the tournament has not been held since and before that it had not been held since 1792 where the three headmaster judges were injured by a rampaging cockatrice, although it is supposed to occur every five years.

The school has had a number of popular and unpopular headmasters and headmistresses over the years. Headmasters have included Armando Dippet, Phineas Nigellus Black, Albus Dumbledore, Dolores Umbridge (Although this was a temporary appointment, following Professor Dumbledore’s suspension) and Severus Snape. The current headmistress is former Transfiguration teacher, Professor Minerva McGonagall. The heads of the school have a long and varied history outside of Hogwarts as well, indeed former headmaster Albus Dumbledore is famous for a great many accomplishments such as the defeat of the great wizard Gelert Grindlewald in 1945, his work with estimed alchemist Nicolas Flamel, discovering the twelve uses of dragon’s blood and his positions held as the former Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot and as the former Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards.

The school’s motto is Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus, which translates as “Never Tickle a Sleeping Dragon”.
