University Summary

The University of Brighton is a UK university of over 21,000 students and 2,500 staff based on five campuses in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings on the south coast of England. It has one of the best teaching quality ratings in the UK and a strong research record, factors which contribute to its reputation as a leading post-1992 university. Its roots can be traced back to 1859 when the Brighton School of Art was opened in the Brighton Royal Pavilion. The university focuses on professional education, with the majority of degrees awarded also leading to professional qualifications.

In 2012 the University of Brighton was 3rd in the People & Planet’s Green League table of UK universities ranked by environmental and ethical performance.

The university and its Students’ Union were awarded Fairtrade status in 2007 and was renewed in 2009. It marks their continued commitment to making a wide range of Fairtrade products available across all sites, and raises awareness of the Fairtrade ethos amongst students and staff.

The University of Brighton’s ethos is one of mutual respect and fairness, which mirrors that of Brighton as a whole. They value and celebrate diversity and are committed to cultivating responsible and sustainable working and learning environments for the community, both within and outside the university. They aim to become a centre of excellence in building sustainability into research, as well as into teaching and learning. The university work with local, regional, national and global bodies to help build communities that exist on that basis.
