About this University

The University offers superb facilities at a vibrant city centre location, close to the sea, with a lively pub and club scene. All courses reflect the University’s commitment to students’ future careers, with dedicated careers and recruitment services, and a strong graduate employment record. The University’s roots go back to 1869, with the founding of Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Art – set up to train engineers and skilled workmen for the city docks and the Royal Navy dockyard.

In the 1960s it was renamed Portsmouth Polytechnic, and was one of the largest polytechnics in the UK, before being granted university status in 1992. By 2016 the University had expanded to 20,000 students on campus, with a further 4,000 studying off-campus through online learning, and with partners in the UK and abroad. Over 60% of research submitted by the University to REF2014 is rated as world-leading and internationally excellent.

In two subject areas, 90% and 89% of all research submitted was rated as world-leading and internationally excellent. This work includes neuro-oncology and neuroscience, establishing the role of genes that are important in developmental processes and addressing the fundamental questions in cosmology and astrophysics.

The entry in Area Studies produced the largest concentration of world-leading and internationally-excellent research in the University, placing us fourth nationally in this subject for Research Power, combining both the quality and size of the submission.

In seven out of the 15 units of assessment we submitted, the impact of our research is rated as outstanding and very considerable in terms of both its reach and significance.
