One of our former MSc students was chosen as the RICS Young Surveyor of the Year Award (Residential) for 2020. Accredited by The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Building, this course is mapped to the Building Surveying pathway to RICS membership. It also offers a route to the Residential Surveying and Building Control pathways.<br/><br/>**How you learn**<br/>All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.<br/><br/>The course includes laboratory work, such as the preparation of traditional lath and plaster walls. You’ll also work on projects which rely on data collection and analysis, cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills, team working and the development of new areas of expertise. <br/><br/>You learn through<br/><br/><br/>- site visits<br/><br/><br/>- laboratory work<br/><br/><br/>- assessment<br/><br/><br/>- field trips<br/><br/><br/>- an international project<br/><br/><br/>**Applied learning<br/>Work placements**<br/><br/>Due to its fast-track delivery, this course doesn’t include a work placement. However, the department and careers service provide information on numerous potential employers – some offer short-term work experience and most offer graduate employment.<br/><br/>**Field trips**<br/><br/>The course makes use of both university and privately-owned buildings for site visits and assessment. This includes an 18th century terraced house which has been converted into a teaching space. <br/><br/>Cross-disciplinary projects are drawn together within an integrative field trip – culminating in an international project in an overseas city. <br/><br/>**Networking opportunities**<br/><br/>You’ll be able to engage with sector-specific employers at a range of networking events – including the Natural and Built Environment Employers Fair, which takes place in the autumn. The department also takes part in the Property Training Forum, which coordinates recruitment rounds, provides valuable input in terms of developing students, and seeks to improve career prospects.
