Media, Culture and Society MSc

The Media, Culture & Society MSc explores how media interacts with and shapes contemporary culture and society. It offers unique interdisciplinary study combining social sciences and arts approaches in the vibrant cultural and media hub of Glasgow.<br/><br/>**WHY THIS PROGRAMME**<br/><br/><br/>- This programme offers a combination of social sciences and arts insights on how we live in today’s media age.<br/><br/><br/>- One-third of the degree is based on choice of an independent dissertation or a collaborative group project.<br/><br/><br/>- It equips students to be critical research-led experts in the opportunities and threats posed by interactions with and dependencies on contemporary media.<br/><br/><br/>- This programme addresses urgent issues of our age: power, inequality, identity politics, trust and journalism, surveillance capitalism, privacy, risk and security, AI, war and conflict, datafication, hate-speech and trolling, memory and the future, the Coronavirus global pandemic.<br/><br/><br/>- Located in the vibrant cultural and media hub of the city of Glasgow.<br/><br/><br/>- Taught by international experts from the Glasgow Media Group, Glasgow Social and Digital Change Group, and talks from key international scholars and industry thinkers including artists, film-makers, archivists, curators, NGOs and photojournalists.<br/><br/><br/>**PROGRAMME STRUCTURE**<br/>You will take four core and two optional courses.<br/><br/>One-third of the degree is comprised of a choice between an individual dissertation OR a group project, under the guidance of a dedicated supervisor. The dissertation offers students the opportunity to identify an original research proposal and to conduct independent research on their chosen topic. Alternatively, the group project is a sustained piece of interdisciplinary research into a contemporary media event or organisation, collaborating with at least two other students.<br/><br/>Courses are taught through a combination of lectures and seminars. These are supplemented with visiting expert speaker talks (artists, film-makers, archivists, curators, photojournalists).<br/><br/>Assessment is based on individual written essays and assignments, presentations, as well as supervised dissertation or group project work.<br/><br/>**Core Courses**<br/>Media, Communications and Journalism: Criticism and Theory<br/>Media, Culture and Memory<br/>Research Design<br/>Transformations in Media, Culture and Society<br/><br/>**Optional Courses**<br/>Students may choose their two options from elsewhere in the School of Social and Political Sciences. However, subject to availability, timetabling and agreement with the relevant course co-ordinator, students may also choose one of their options from outside of the School provision.
