Universities will all have different university entry requirements for students. Not all universities want the same thing from their applicants, and some may even require specific work experience before you apply.

The requirements of an education degree can be somewhat higher than other subjects. These requirements are benchmarks to ensure that students have the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in this sector.

What is an Education degree?

Education degrees provide students with a platform for a career in education. These degrees typically focus on teaching methods, classroom learning, school curriculum, governmental policies and general teacher theory.

These degrees cover a broad range of topics. These can often lead to different qualification types, such as a PGCE degree or a Master’s in Education.

What are the Education degree entry requirements?

The entry requirements for an education degree will change depending on where you apply. Not all universities will have the same university entry requirements. However, there is a general average that can be ascertained from the previous year’s entry requirements.

The most common entry requirements for an education degree are:

Type Min. grades/points required overall Max. grades/points required overall Average grades/points required
UCAS points 80 152 104
A Levels CCD A*A*A* BCC
BTEC MPP DDD DMM
International Baccalaureate 28 36 28

You will also need to speak to your ideal university about which qualifications are accepted. For example, not all universities will necessarily accept specific qualifications for a subject of this kind, so you must know before you fire off your UCAS application.

A Levels

A Levels are the most common and widely accepted qualifications for universities in the UK. All universities accept A Levels as part of their admissions criteria. However, not all students necessarily need to have them. For those that have studied A Levels, you don’t necessarily have a set of subjects that you are required to have studied. However, English and maths can always be useful springboards.

BTECs

BTECs are an excellent way to gain more vocational qualifications. These are also widely accepted qualifications. However, some universities may not accept them as part of their admissions process. As with A Levels, a specific subject is not necessarily required for this degree.

IELTS

The IELTS are specifically for international students. The scores you need for education courses(/courses/undergraduate?s=education) will vary depending on where you are applying. As the IELTS does not cover specific subjects, you will be judged on your performance in each task. The required scores for each section will, again, change with each university.

International Baccalaureate

As with the IELTS, the International Baccalaureate (IB) is purely for international students. As with the other qualifications, you do not need to have studied a specific subject. However, it is recommended that you achieve a grade 4 or higher for Higher Level English and maths. Some universities may require higher, while others may accept scores for Standard Level.

How do I write my Education personal statement?

Your personal statement is your chance to present both yourself as a student and your love of education. It can often be a little tricky for students to sum up both elements of themselves and distil them into 4,000 characters.

When writing about you, make sure that you convey what it is that makes you tick. Universities will want to know about your hobbies and interests and, if possible, how these link to your love of education.

Another important element is what prompted your interest in education. Did a family member work in education? Did a teacher have a profound impact on your life? Did you read a book or watch a film or TV show that sparked the interest? These are all useful things to mention.

Another important aspect is your own personal milestones and achievements. If you can relate these back to education, then brilliant; if not, talk about how they have shaped you as a person and why you wanted to achieve them.

What is the best university to study an Education degree?

The best university to study an education degree is the one that suits you best. No one university offers a better standard of teaching or lecturing than any other, as they all have different strengths and weaknesses.

The first thing to do is to ask yourself what you want from a university. Do you prefer a university that has better facilities? Do you prefer one that has a better standard of teaching? Or do you prefer one that has better ties to the industry? All of these are important things to consider.

We recommend attending some university open days before making your choice. This is the best way to get to know what university will appeal to you the most and will also give you a chance to ask a whole host of questions too.

What jobs can I get with an Education degree?

Not all jobs in education necessarily revolve around being a teacher. Working in education means that you can work in the government, social services or any other job that works with children.

The most common jobs you can do with an education degree are:

  • Careers adviser
  • Child psychiatrist
  • Counsellor
  • Family support worker
  • Lecturer
  • Teacher
  • Teaching assistant
  • Tutor
  • Youth worker

If you wish to become a teacher, you will also need separate qualifications. This means studying for a PGCE degree or a Master’s in Education before you can apply for roles of this kind. You may also need to study a specific subject if you want to specialise beforehand.

Are Education courses available in Clearing?

Education is one of the most popular courses in the UK. When the time comes, you will typically be able to find education Clearing courses.

The courses on offer may differ from your initial choices. You may find that some courses have lower entry requirements or different focuses. For example, you may find that any Clearing courses are sandwich courses or are studied in conjunction with another subject.

Even if you are applying through Clearing, it is recommended that you still look to attend an open day. These are the best ways to gauge whether or not it is the right university for you and to ask the questions you want to ask.
