Covid PhD

(5)·By Tigerlily B·Chemistry· Jun 2023
Starting a PhD in covid with Imperial covid rules (one week in the lab, one week at home) really helped solidify how important taking time out of the lab to read and consolidate data is. So actually it was a great start to my uni experience.

So many events back to back! Got to meet a variety of different and eccentric personalities and something for everyone! From sports to social events to drinking and non- alcoholic friendly events! Living in south Kensington was such a surreal experience! A short walk from Harrods and watching the sunrise in Hyde park! Nowhere else even comes close. The libraries are relatively clean and have all the amenities you'd need! I think general there is an abundance of options on where you can socialise or work. Lectures are well structured and the lecturers are very keen to get students involved in research opportunities or answer questions. I also really like the way the course involves both academic and patient focussed modules. Living in central London is amazing! You never run out of places to go and it's so culturally diverse and welcoming! Probably one of the best cities in the UK in my opinion.

My night out are fun as we are in london there is a lot going so this means a lot of clubing and bar nights, the location of the uni is great next to the royal albert hall so we get to see great events happening BAFTA's, teachers are very much interested in making us suceed in take into consideration what we tell them (most of them) students are very multicutltural, only downside is that accomodation and life is very expensive

Absolutely amazing, lots of communities, engagement and events! There are lots of help in regards to accommodation and aid in finding somewhere specifically for you, the support team is always available to contact It consisted of several libraries and study locations, lots of variety of classrooms (seminars, labs, lecture rooms), the student union is amazing and easy to access. The lecturers are amazing, they are so involved with their students, they have there own professional experience in the field of study, continuously researching and studying, they engage with student. So much to do, being located at South Kensington has been an advantage, from several museums, parks, Victoria Albert hall.

Medicine, Year 1

Found it really interesting so far because, not only is my course great, I have met several people of different backgrounds. I love the cultural diversity and I like how different we are from one another.

Secondly, I'm completely overwhelmed by the choice of extracurricular activities available to students. I have gotten involved in dance, netball and RAG and met some great people! University is SO MUCH MORE than just getting a degree.

Freshers was great. There were a lot of events lined up for literally every day of Freshers. Imperial offered a "Freshers passport" that gives you access to all of the events. Imperial offer accomodation incredibly close to campus on the corner of the National History Museums. Really modern accommodations, with 6 halls on one square so a lot of your coursemayes would be no more than a few minutes away Imperial has spent a lot of money renewing the library, and a £30/year membership (I think) to the gym which has all of the facilities you could need to be honest! Lectures are delivered to by world leaders in their field which is definitely makes the teaching stand out. The course leads organise the lectures so they flow from one another and make coherent sense! The lecturers use as many methods as they can to engage the students i.e. a microphone that students catch and speak into! City life is good because it's so diverse! You don't need to worry about things to do ever running out when you're in London and 5 years in I'm still finding new gems across the city. Prices can be a bit more expensive, but the pay for jobs and from student finance is higher to balance that with!

Medicine, Year 2

Freshers week was great, obviously was able to meet many new people and also make many friends. For someone who doesn't drink I thought my options would be limited when trying to find events and activities to do but I definitely managed to do a lot and felt like I wasn't alone as a lot of people in my course were in the same position as me. I lived in North Acton which has the cheapest accommodation but also the furthest from main campus (~40mins commute). Did not regret this at all really considering how the weekly rent was almost half as much as the on-campus accommodation and my accommodation was spotless and really nice to live in Library will always be busy no matter what time you go - but lunch is the worst as everyone goes to study for an hour or so. One thing you can do is try and book a room with friends, that way you can have your own study space and you'll be guaranteed to be able to use it. Gym is also extremely cheap (£30-£40 for the whole year) and in North Acton, the gym was part of the same building as my accommodation so really convenient and met all my needs. Presentations for lectures are really well layed out and in a standardised format throughout making note taking really easy. Majority of lecturers are easy to follow and keep the lecture content interesting. Also, with medicine we were able to do weekly practical content which was a nice break from constant theory. I have always wanted to live in the capital, coming from a small city in the south west. I didn't feel scared at all when moving to London, instead I was excited and even still that novelty hasn't worn out yet. Travel around London is so much more convenient than where I'm from and you don't really appreciate this until you start going out to different places to eat and sight see etc.

The course was taught by researchers working on the cutting edge of science and the extracurricular opportunities were amazing. Some work to be done decreasing the price of Year 1 accommodation close to university and pastoral care.

It was insightful and showed us what we'd be doing for the next few years accommodation is very good, reasonable prices and the place was relatively new and very close to school. there are a lot of facilities. the library in particular is spectacular. it's open most of the week and I can study there until late at night. it's also very new and clean. lecturers are very nice and friendly, and they deliver material in an understandable way City life is hectic, but I didn't really get to experience much of it because I was always studying

Imperial College London- MSc Molecular Biology and Pathology of Viruses

(5)·By George L·Microbiology· Jun 2023
There was a very heavy workload which at times felt extremely stressful. However, the course was extremely insightful and the material covered included lots of very interesting topics. I always felt well-supported by my lecturers, who were extremely knowledgable (word class lecturers) and always happy to answer questions through having intellectual discussions.
