Art PhD

The School of Art at Aberystwyth University offers a <strong>PhD</strong> or <strong>MPhil</strong> in either <strong>Fine Art</strong> or <strong>Art History</strong>. The courses are designed for students who seek to undertake sustained study to generate original research in a specified field.<br/><br/>The School of Art is housed in a magnificent Grade II listed building where history and tradition meet contemporary practice. It offers large studios, print workshops, darkrooms, lecture theatres, seminar rooms, and a MacSuite.<br/><br/>Our School of Art is an accredited art museum that runs its own galleries, meaning students will benefit from studying in a museum environment, where you can see original artworks held in our collection and shown in our galleries.<br/><br/><strong>DProf</strong><br/>The Aberystwyth University DProf programme combines taught modules with research conducted by students under the supervision of staff who have expertise in the topic of study. Taught modules such as ‘Leadership for Researchers’ allow students to reflect on their own professional experience which can then be applied to research settings, while modules focusing on quantitative and qualitative research methods provide students with the skills required to collect and analyse data.<br/><br/>The ‘Pilot Study’ module allows students to test their research skills by designing and analysing a small-scale project using their own research data. In the first year of study the supervisory team supports students to complete the taught modules, and in the second and third year of study supervisors work closely with students to undertake research on the chosen topic area.<br/><br/>DProf topics in the School of Art include subjects such as landscape and the environment, print practice, museums and galleries practices, social engagement, education as well as other professional fields.
