This practical course will give you a deep understanding of the creative processes involved in the film industry, as you work towards producing a major film project.

Youll explore the full breadth of filmmaking, from idea to launch – examining all facets of production across narrative drama, documentary and digital advertising. Examining different cinematic techniques and styles, you’ll learn how to construct persuasive, compelling stories and manage the production process from start to finish. Youll also explore how film has developed over time, and acquire a critical understanding of the cultural contexts of film and the relationship between storyteller and audience.

From day one you’ll get to produce your own films. Practical workshops using specialist facilities allow you to experience different industry roles and experiment with techniques. You’ll also work with professional clients on live briefs, giving you valuable experience on how to adapt your skills to fit a client’s brief and brand, and create outcomes that place you at the forefront of the industry.

Being based in London, youll also have the opportunity to attend film screenings, workshops and masterclasses – learning from established directors, producers and industry leaders – and join work placements to put your learning into context, building your professional network (past students have worked with the likes of the BBC, the British Film Institute and UK Cinema Association). You’ll also have the chance to showcase your work at the Aesthetica Short Film Festival – an international, BAFTA-qualifying festival celebrating independent film from around the world.

In your final year, you’ll work on a major film project, from pre-production to post-production. You’ll research ideas, select your crew and direct your own film – from drama to commercial, music video to factual documentary. This will become part of your professional showreel that you can show to future employers and clients.

Integrated Foundation option
This integrated foundation year has been specially designed to give you the introductory knowledge and business skills needed to confidently progress to degree-level study.

Its structured around discipline knowledge, with extra modules that introduce you to the transferable skills youll need at degree level and beyond – giving you a solid grounding in both management principles and business skills.

Once youve successfully completed your Foundation year, youll be able to progress to any of our business, social sciences, humanities or media undergraduate courses.

Building on this foundation, you’ll develop specialist knowledge in your chosen course.
