Since then, we have developed into a large teaching and research community - one of the best-established subject areas of our kind in the UK.<br/><br/>Today, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American studies at Edinburgh offers a unique research environment that brings together cutting-edge expertise in Iberian and Latin American cultures with a strong cross-field focus on:<br/><br/><br/>* literary studies<br/><br/><br/>* visual cultures<br/><br/><br/>* language and society<br/><br/><br/>We specialise in the major areas of literary and cultural studies, and film and visual culture, from:<br/><br/><br/>* Spain, with a particular focus on Catalonia and the Basque Country<br/><br/><br/>* Latin America, including Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, and other countries in the region<br/><br/><br/>* Portugal, Brazil and Lusophone Africa<br/><br/><br/>We foster innovative postgraduate work that bridges linguistic and academic boundaries.<br/><br/>Over the course of your PhD, you will complete an original body of work under the expert guidance of at least two supervisors. Your thesis will be around 80,000 words.<br/><br/>Our programme includes access to skills training, including research methodologies specific to Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. Our research collections, resources and facilities are outstanding.
