Critical Care and Anaesthesia PhD/MPhil PhD

Anaesthetists and intensive care doctors provide care to a broad spectrum of people - from completely healthy people having minor surgery, through to people with life-threatening injuries and illnesses.<br/><br/>Although major advances have been made resulting in much improved outcomes, we know that overall in-hospital mortality after surgery is still around 3.5%. Our research is focussed on addressing ways of addressing this:<br/><br/><br/>- improving our understanding of how the lungs, circulation and kidneys work in critical illness<br/><br/><br/>- clinical studies investigating new ways of caring for elderly patients with hip fracture<br/><br/><br/>- understanding and improving the safety of healthcare delivery in the peri-operative period. <br/><br/><br/>Core research themes/topics include:<br/><br/>patient safety<br/>computational modelling<br/>hip fracture<br/>ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia<br/>vascular biology<br/>acute kidney injury
