There is also a severe shortage of power engineering expertise in other sectors, such as government bodies and finance organisations, where a detailed knowledge of energy supply and demand is increasingly important as societies develop and adapt to pressing environmental and economic constraints, dwindling reserves of fossil fuels and the emergence of new energy technologies.

As the mitigation of global warming becomes ever more important, the electrification of transportation and heat as well as the accelerated penetration of renewable energy into the power grid have become main objectives in Electrical Power Engineering. The technologies studied in this MSc are the underpinning innovation forces in various industries including the electric transportation industry, aviation industry and power generation and transmission industries including renewable energy. A wide selection of optional modules allows student to tailor their learning to match their personal interests and career goals.

You will also undertake an individual research project – an extensive experimental, theoretical, or computational study on a topic of your choice, guided by an academic supervisor. Previous project titles include: Wide Band Gap Semiconductor Materials: Revolution in Power Electronics; Gate Oxide Reliability of SiC Power MOSFET; Design and Test of an Isolated Gate Driver Bias Power Supply; Machine Learning for Smart Grid Operations and Security; Dual Active Bridge Converter with Wide Input and Output Voltage Ranges; Robust Control of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors; Solid State Transformer (SST) Based MW-Level EV Fast Charging Station for the Heavy-Duty Vehicles .

Our research within the School of Engineering covers a wide range of expertise in power electronics, electric drives, control and energy storage.

Our MSc Electrical Power Engineering will give you the knowledge and skills required for a career in electrical power engineering and is an opportunity to update your knowledge with the latest developments in renewable energy and smart grids.

This information is applicable for 2026 entry.
