Biomedical science sits at the heart of modern healthcare. Every diagnosis, treatment, and medical breakthrough starts with understanding human health and disease – from developing new diagnostic techniques to improving patient care and advancing medicine.
On this Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and Royal Society of Biology (RSB) accredited degree, you'll explore the science behind health and disease while developing practical laboratory skills. You'll investigate microbiology, genetics, immunology, cell biology, physiology, molecular biology, and more, discovering how scientific research translates into diagnostics, treatments, and therapies.
This course is designed to keep your future open. After your first year, you can continue with BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science route, or specialise through one of our pathways in:
* Medical Biochemistry: explore how biochemical processes affect human health and investigate the causes and diagnosis of disease.
* Medical Microbiology: study the microorganisms responsible for infectious diseases, how they interact with the body, and the strategies used to diagnose, treat, and control them.
* Molecular Biotechnology: investigate genetics, gene technologies, and molecular advances that are transforming disease diagnosis and treatment.
* Pharmacological Sciences: discover how medicines work, how new drugs are developed, and the science behind treating disease safely and effectively.
* Applied Biomedical Science\*: apply to complete a 45-week placement in an NHS pathology laboratory after your second year. This four-year route allows you to complete your IBMS Registration Training Portfolio alongside your degree.
As part of this course, you'll:
* Learn through practical laboratory sessions and applied projects, developing the skills used across healthcare, research, and the life sciences
* Build your confidence using a range of laboratory techniques and specialist biomedical science equipment to investigate, diagnose, and monitor disease

UCAS Tariff
A minimum of 72 points from two A Levels or equivalent, excluding General Studies. A minimum of 40 points at A Level or equivalent must be from a Biological Science or Applied Science. If you are studying Biology to meet this requirement you must also achieve a `Pass' in the practical assessment, where that practical assessment is separated (from 2017).
GCSE/National 4/National 5
GCSE English Language and Maths at Grade 4 or above (Grade C for those sitting their GCSE before 2017) or equivalent. Key Skills Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2 and the Certificate in Adult Literacy/Numeracy are accepted in place of GCSEs.
