Step into the future of smart technology. This hands-on, IET-accredited robotics and automation degree is built for the next generation of engineers.

Robots are transforming the world. They explore space, power global manufacturing, and transform how we live. If you want to design, build, and program intelligent machines, our specialised Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)-accredited robotics degree is the perfect place to start.

From responsive robotic arms to autonomous vehicles and AI-driven automation, the future depends on engineers who can blend creativity, scientific expertise, and problem-solving.

In specialist robotics engineering facilities, you’ll explore how machines think, move, and interact with the world. You’ll combine ideas from mechanical, electrical, and electronic engineering with artificial intelligence to create innovative automated solutions to real challenges.

As part of this course, you’ll:
• Design, build, and program your own robots, applying robotics and automation theory in hands-on workshops and projects

• Explore the past, present, and future of developments in robotics and automated systems

• Master electronics, programming, and systems engineering to create smart, connected machines

• Use AI and machine learning to solve complex robotics challenges

• Develop and test embedded systems that power intelligent, responsive devices

This course gives you the skills, confidence, and industry credibility to become a robotics engineer, automation specialist, or AI developer, ready to shape the next wave of innovation.

Find out more...
Future-proof your career
BEng Robotics & Automation is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), meaning what you learn matters in the real world. When you graduate, you’ll meet the academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status – boosting your credibility and opening the door to a wide range of professional engineering careers.

Learn by doing
You won’t just learn about robots, you’ll build them. In our specialist facilities, you’ll work with industry-standard software and hardware to design systems that think for themselves. Through practical workshops and lab-based projects, you’ll gain skills in:
• Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA)

• Embedded systems development

• Building AI and machine learning for autonomous robots

• Designing programmable logic controllers (PLC) and highly automated control systems

Insightful fieldtrips
You’ll also go on exciting industry visits to gain first-hand insight into how robotics and automation power modern manufacturing. Previous students have visited sites such as Yorkshire Tea and a Coca-Cola bottling plant.

Build the skills employers want
Alongside technical and scientific expertise, you’ll develop the professional skills that set great engineers apart: teamwork, project management, innovation, and the ability to communicate complex engineering ideas clearly. An optional placement year enables you to apply your learning in industry, build real experience, and explore careers in robotics, automation, systems engineering, or advanced manufacturing.

Why study the BEng Robotics and Automation degree at Leeds Beckett University?
• Future-focused engineering - you’ll explore robotics, automation, mechatronics, and AI to prepare for fast-growing global industries

- Hands-on from day one - work with real robotics, embedded systems, and automation technology in high-spec, modern facilities

• Industry-informed content - you’ll learn from expert engineers and benefit from our strong industry links

- Join a collaborative engineering community - work with fellow students in computing, engineering, and AI to build your problem-solving skills

- Graduate ready to start your career - you’ll build a strong technical portfolio and gain valuable experience through an optional industry placement year
