As human beings, we spend more time consuming media than any other activity. In the digital age, traditional news and media platforms are further supplemented by a huge number of online platforms. Choice, therefore, has never been greater and quality has never been so variable. In the age of ‘fake news’, the ability to differentiate objective fact from speculative rhetoric has never been more important. This programme aims to equip students with a three-way analytical, practical and employability skill set that will enable them to enter into the graduate job market more easily. Beyond the core theme of journalism that underpins the course, you will explore creative media practice, radio and video production, digital and social media, public relations, marketing, media theory, media law and film. Media at Swansea is ranked 1st in the UK for Student Experience and Teaching Quality (Times Good University Guide 2024) and 1st in the UK for Student Satisfaction (Complete University Guide 2024).

You will be taught by industry professionals, with firsthand experience of working in the media industry, using an equal split of theory and practice to gain extensive skills and experience across flexible module pathway options. You also have the option to study a number of modules in Welsh. Your third year will be spent on a Year Abroad, where you will benefit from unique cultural experiences to further enhance your student experience and career prospects.

Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, you will have access to our Media Creativity Suite, which has a video studio and a computer lab kitted out with iMacs installed with industry standard software, including Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Creative Cloud. You will also have the opportunity to get involved creating content for the university’s online media publication – The Swansea Mumbler.

Our Media and Communication graduates are truly international and are employed not just in the UK but all around the world. They have careers in journalism, media, business, public relations and marketing, digital marketing, broadcasting, TV and radio, and publishing.
