The MPsych (Hons) Psychology with Clinical Perspectives is a four-year undergraduate masters level programme which provides an academic preparation for a career in clinical psychology. Hands-on learning is at core of this newly designed course. We embedded practical activities into all elements of your learning, so you can put new knowledge into practice and build the practical skills a modern clinical psychologist needs. In our new Psychology Experiential Learning lab – Psyc:EL – you’ll explore the breadth of psychology at first hand. Working alongside fellow students you will experience psychological phenomena, learn about interventions and therapy techniques, and use psychological tools and equipment. Working through a series short projects designed to tackle specific problems you’ll get the rapid feedback you need to hone your skills and knowledge so you can achieve your best potential. Case studies and interview techniques show how our knowledge of psychology connects and informs other disciplines and give you the confidence and experience to step up to a career in clinical psychology.

As you progress through your studies, you’ll be able to explore the areas of psychology that interest and benefit you the most. You have the chance to spend a year studying at a partner university abroad or working on a professional placement to apply your new knowledge and experience to professional practice across a range of service providers. By your third year, you’ll have complete freedom of choice across over 20 topic choices, each taught by a world expert in their field, and will be working on a clinical research project of your own choosing. These options and opportunities allow you to shape the clinician that you want to become.

On completing the third year you can either graduate with the (BPS accredited) BSc (Hons) Psychology or continue-on for specialist training in the science and practice of psychological therapy.

The final year of the course is taught at masters-level, and balances advanced methods for clinical research with extensive practice in core clinical skills designed to place graduates at competitive advantage for careers in clinical practice. Innovative and engaging techniques provide practical training in key clinical skills and competencies. Core modules extend and secure understanding of the theory, application, and challenges of quantitative methods for clinical data, while cross-cutting modules are designed to integrate theory with professional perspectives. For example, modules such as The Brain and its Disorders provides detailed current knowledge of specific conditions, providing a secure grounding in the neuroscience of clinical approaches to schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease and dementia. In addition, practical insight to NHS service delivery in clinical practice provides instruction on the principles of values-based practice and the governance provided by professional and regulatory codes of conduct and ethics
