Education has the potential to transform attitudes and approaches to the world. Combined with a language it has the potential to foster understanding of societies and cultures and to enhance communication with people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. On this programme we invite you to take an active role in learning to become a critical and creative thinker. You will acquire a deep understanding of teaching and learning in a range of contexts and from international and intercultural perspectives. You will be taught by staff who are experts in their field.

The programme combines an in-depth study of the cultural and social phenomena and practices of communities where the languages of study are spoken — with the development of sophisticated plurilingual communication skills. You will consider the power structures, norms and identities that shape people’s experiences of education and engage in the critical evaluation of a broad range of issues related to the language and culture of study.

Through the programme, you will acquire a grounding in research literacy, critical enquiry skills and professional communication skills that will enable you to take on language or education-related roles, from teaching and policy-making to translation and international relations. Whilst the BA in Education and a Language will not provide you with qualified teacher status, you will be well-placed to undertake a PGCE after graduating in either Primary Education or Secondary Education in Modern Foreign Languages.
