programme and is not accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC); therefore, students are not considered
registered student midwives and NMC regulations do not apply at this stage.
During the foundation year, you will be supported to develop the essential academic skills needed to succeed at undergraduate
level, alongside an introduction to the diverse fields of nursing and midwifery. You will also begin to develop fundamental clinical
skills through supervised learning in state‑of‑the‑art clinical skills laboratories, enabling you to build confidence and competence
within a safe and supportive learning environment.
This year provides a strong foundation for further study in healthcare, including the core scientific knowledge required to underpin
the clinical theory and practice you will experience in Years 2 - 4 of the degree programme. Students will have the opportunity to
confirm their chosen pathway at the end of Level 3 in preparation for progression to Level 4, supported by targeted Personal
Development Tutor sessions to aid decision making. If selecting midwifery, students will not be able to transfer pathways at
Levels 4–6.
Upon successful completion of the foundation year, including DBS and Occupational Health clearance and a successful
admissions interview, you will progress to our NMC‑validated Midwifery degree programme (Years 2 - 4) as a registered
midwifery student. You will undertake a range of practice placements designed to develop your clinical skills, professional
knowledge, and confidence. Studying at ARU Peterborough, you will benefit from cutting‑edge clinical skills facilities and
become part of a supportive and inclusive nursing community. On graduation, you will be fully prepared to begin your career as a
Registered Midwife.
