Why study BSc (Hons) Children’s Nursing at BNU?
NMC registration
Our children’s nursing degree programme integrates academic study alongside practice-based learning. It is underpinned by a strong collaboration between the University, service users (experts by experience) and our NHS practice partners, in response to both Nursing & Midwifery Council policy and regulatory developments.
On successful completion of the course, you’ll be eligible to apply for your NMC registration, meaning you’ll then be able to practice as a qualified nurse.
Trusts
During your time on the BSc Children’s Nursing degree, you’ll have the opportunity to go on placement in a range of our linked trusts and hospitals, including:
Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust
Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust
Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust
The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Placements?
Throughout the course, you’ll allocate approximately half of your time to clinical practice and the remaining half to University-based learning. Our strong partnerships with various NHS Trusts and independent care providers in the region ensure that students have diverse and enriching clinical placements. Many of our students are employed by the Trust that they worked with during their time at the University.
Support
We understand that studying children's nursing can be challenging, so you'll receive support throughout your course both in the classroom and on placement, including guidance from a dedicated link lecturer. Additional support is available through our Student Wellbeing Centre and Student Learning Achievement Centre, helping with areas such as academic writing, CV development and wellbeing. Eligible nursing students may also receive at least £5,000 per year through the NHS Learning Support Fund, which does not need to be repaid.
Facilities
Across our campuses, you'll develop confidence in children's nursing through realistic simulation-based learning using authentic equipment, NHS-approved consumables and technology-enhanced manikins. Audio/visual debrief technology supports learning and feedback, while advanced PROMPT models provide resuscitation training. These facilities help you become familiar with the equipment and techniques used within local hospital trusts before placement.
What Will I Study?
This course prepares you for a rewarding career in children's nursing, developing the knowledge and skills needed to support the health and wellbeing of children, young people and their families. You'll gain experience across a range of healthcare settings, including neonatal units, children's wards, community environments and pediatric intensive care, while exploring the evidence and theory that underpin practice. Working alongside experienced healthcare professionals, you'll develop into a caring, confident and practice-ready children's nurse with opportunities for future career progression. The course is also available with an integrated Foundation Year to support academic development and progression onto the degree.
