From acquiring sought after employability skills, to the possibility of spending time in industry, you will graduate with the analytical, critical thinking, programming and teamworking skills that are highly valued by employers in a broad range of sectors.
Why choose this course?
* Top 10 in England for Physics (NSS 2025, broad-based universities)\*
* Top 10 in the UK for Mathematics (Guardian University Guide, 2026)
* Accredited by the Institute of Physics (IoP)
* Acquire the advanced techniques and skills to solve real-world problems at the interface of Physics and Mathematics
* Benefit from hands-on laboratory work, problem-solving sessions, innovative assessments and small-group tutorials
In your first year of study, you will develop a solid foundation in core physics concepts exploring topics including gravity, relativity and matter, electricity, magnetism and waves. Building your professional skillset, you will learn the basics of computer programming with python, gain hands on practice in conducting a variety of physical experiments, develop the art of scientific writing and reporting. You will also strengthen your mathematics skills by studying calculus and differential equations.\
\
Year two continues to build on your understanding of physics principles with exploration of optics, thermodynamics, quantum and nuclear physics. You will further your laboratory, mathematics, computing and career skills by working on individual experiments and team investigations, building your CV and gaining important new applied mathematical skills, including more advanced mathematics modules covering differential equations and vector calculus. Between your second and third year, you can choose to take an International Year, or spend time in industry with a year-long Work Placement.\
\
In your final year you will tackle frontier topics in physics and mathematics and have the opportunity to develop your own research interests, guided by our world-leading researchers. You will have opportunities for individual advanced project work which can be aligned to your own interests and career goals. The physics optional modules allow you to delve deeper into quantum physics and other areas of cutting-edge physics. The range of mathematics optional modules also gives you the choice to further develop advanced physical and mathematical skills in cross-over topics like fluid mechanics and wave propagation.
