This BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computing brings together subjects from mathematics, statistics, and computing to address the current and future main challenges faced in business, society, engineering, and science.<br/><br/>The course has been designed to be accredited by relevant professional bodies in computing and mathematics (Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications and British Computer Society), to meet employers’ expectations for professional standards in the fields of mathematics, statistics, and computing.<br/><br/>A unique feature of this degree is the balance between theory and applications, allowing you to develop a deep understanding of mathematical and statistical tools whilst, at the same time, being able to translate these into concrete computer-based solutions.<br/><br/>With our society being increasingly driven by data, the job market is in huge demand of professionals with strong numerical and programming skills.<br/><br/>Our BSc (Hons) degree in Mathematics and Computing aims to produce undergraduates encompassing many of the skills that are in increasing demand in a job market and society driven by data. <br/><br/>Throughout your studies, you will be introduced to mathematical, statistical, and computing techniques that form the basis of many tools used in industry, engineering, business, and education.<br/><br/>In particular, you will have finely-tuned skills in using information and data as an integral part of problem-solving and decision-making. <br/><br/>More specifically, the BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computing course will enable you to: <br/><br/><br/>- meet the current and future employer demands for well-trained, competent, and adaptable professionals capable of dealing with data-driven decision-making<br/><br/><br/>- be highly numerate and able to use this in applications in computing and numerical modelling<br/><br/><br/>- be an independent learner, able to acquire new skills and continue to build your knowledge to adapt to a rapidly changing job market<br/><br/><br/>- undertake postgraduate studies in several disciplines related to mathematics, statistics and/or computing<br/>- be a strong communicator and have strong interpersonal and team working skills<br/><br/><br/>- have knowledge of ethical issues, particularly in the need for sensitivity in data handling and decision-making. <br/><br/><br/>The above aims will be supported through an empowering approach to teaching and learning that caters for the individual student, looking at your academic and occupational backgrounds, to help you fulfil your own academic potential.<br/><br/>This teaching and learning experience will be achieved by:<br/><br/><br/>- providing you with a supportive learning environment that will develop interpersonal skills, raise self-awareness, and encourage personal and career growth as well as stimulate the idea of lifelong learning<br/><br/><br/>- regular contact with employers and career advisors, both as an integral part of taught modules as well as through extracurricular activities and events<br/><br/><br/>- an inclusive and diverse learning environment that makes use of a variety of teaching and learning methods, depending on the subject matter, the level and employer demands<br/><br/><br/>- encouragement of teamwork both within and across taught modules<br/><br/><br/>- access to a wide range of facilities ranging from social spaces and state-of-the-art study environments to modern computer labs.<br/><br/><br/>This course includes a foundation year. <br/>The foundation year course is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to continue onto your Honours degree. You will study a range of subjects that will underpin your future study and also gain valuable experience of university life, with full access to campus facilities. Successful completion of the year allows you to progress straight onto Level 4 of this course.
