Course Overview
Our biology degree covers all the major biological concepts, including evolution and genetics. You'll also gain valuable hands-on experience in laboratories and learn important field techniques.

* Make lifelong friends on residential field courses (UK trips are included in your fees; optional overseas trips are extra).
What you’ll do
* You’ll study a range of biology topics, from microbes to humans. Including the biology of disease, the natural world, evolution, genetics and how humans and organisms interact with their environment.
* You’ll have the opportunity to gain work experience at the Young Scientist Centre (YSC). This will enhance your employability in areas such as science communication and education.
* You can apply for the Undergraduate Research Internship Scheme run by the University. It is based with the biology teaching team over the summer, and you can take an optional work-based module in your final year.
Future careers
You can follow a range of biology-related careers. From becoming a research scientist or technician to working in the health or pharmaceutical industries. You could also pursue conservation and species management or teaching and science communication.

One of the biggest advantages of our Foundation Year in this subject is the flexibility it provides. Successful completion can lead to progression onto a range of exciting bioscience degree programmes, including:

These courses combine hands-on laboratory experience, modern facilities, and research-informed teaching to prepare graduates for careers in healthcare, science, research and the pharmaceutical industry. Whether you are interested in understanding disease, discovering new medicines, developing treatments, or pursuing a career in healthcare or research, the Foundation Year provides a supportive route into higher education and a range of future opportunities.

Students on the Foundation Year may also have the opportunity to apply for our Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) programme.
To be considered, you must meet all of the following:
* meet level 3 academic requirements such as:
a minimum of CCC or equivalent 96 UCAS tariff points from 3 A Levels, including 2 science subjects at grade C or above, one of which must be Chemistry or Biology.
or
Minimum DDD in BTEC Applied Science
* Hold GCSE Maths and English grade C/4
* Pass Foundation Year with an average of 70% overall, with at least 50% in biology and chemistry examinations
* Apply for MPharm through UCAS for a future intake
* Pass successful interview
* Obtain satisfactory DBS, Occupational Health and Fitness to Practice checks.
Please note that progression to MPharm is not automatic, and all Foundation Year and MPharm entry requirements must be met.
