Environmental Scientists are needed more than ever by industry, government and society. This environmental science degree course brings together information from a wide range of subjects to explore some of the most important environmental issues, such as climate change, pollution, conservation, and food security.
The BSc Environmental Science with Foundation Year programme combines a foundation year with the three year Honours Degree to create an integrated four year programme. The programme provides an excellent introduction to studying a science subject at university and will provide you with the knowledge, skills and confidence required to study at degree-level. The Foundation Year programme is ideal for applicants who do not quite meet the entry requirements for the three year degree or who would benefit from further a further year’s study in relation to studying a science subject.
Successful completion of the Foundation Year will see you progress to Year 1 of the Environmental Science programme.
As a Bangor University student, you will be taught by committed and enthusiastic staff and will have access to the University’s extensive student support network and facilities.
Our research-informed teaching enables you to tap into the latest findings and knowledge of staff whose specialisms cover all major areas within the discipline, such as climate change, food security, land use policy, pollution, soils, and water quality. At the same time, practical sessions, field work, lab and classroom lessons develop your scientific knowledge in biology, chemistry, earth science, and land and water resource management.
Bangor is an ideal place to study Environmental Science as our location provides easy access to a wide range of natural environments, from the North Wales coastline to the varied landscape of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park with its long history of multiple land use, mining, and quarrying. Fieldwork is an integral part of this degree with opportunities for residential trips further afield, as well as activity locally and across North Wales.
Our well-established, world-leading research in the environmental sciences means we often collaborate with local, national, and international organisations that employ environmental scientists. This helps to ensure that the content of our Environmental Science degrees remains relevant and up to date.
Strong local links include Eryri National Park Authority, Natural Resources Wales, UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Dŵr Cymru/Welsh Water, the National Trust, Natural England, consultancies, the Environment Agency and Forestry Commission. Some contribute to teaching and offer opportunities for work placements.
A mark of our academic excellence, all our Environmental Science degrees are accredited by the Institution of Environmental Science (IES). This recognises the professional relevance and applicability of our curriculum to the workplace. By studying an accredited degree, you are also entitled to free student membership and access to exclusive online information, members-only reports and opportunities to network with professionals at free or reduced entry events.
