Ever wondered how an F1 car can weigh so little? Or what an artificial heart valve is made of? If so, this is the degree for you.
Look around you - everything you see is made from carefully designed materials. To build a better world, we need experts who can enhance these materials, making them stronger, more efficient, and less wasteful. As a materials scientist and engineer, you’ll drive innovation that shapes the future. Join us to learn how.
Our materials department was the first in the UK, and studying with us means learning from a team with deep expertise in both research and industry. Our work influences a wide range of innovations - from the design of Formula 1 tyres to the composites used in aeroplanes and luggage. We’re proud to be home to several fellows of the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Ready to shape the future?
You’ll build a strong understanding of fundamental engineering concepts such as mechanics, design, materials and mathematical modelling. At the same time, you’ll develop the practical, collaborative skills all engineers need.
Everything you learn will be applied to a design project which addresses one of the key challenges identified by the UK Government – such as an aging society, clean growth and the future of mobility.
By the time you graduate, you’ll be prepared to tackle the global issues facing our society. Materials engineer, research scientist, patent examiner – a degree in materials science and engineering can take you in a range of directions, where you’ll have the chance to make big changes.
Students who do not have the required high school qualifications for admission to this degree, or who do not meet their UCAS conditional offers, may be considered for our foundation year.
You will enrol onto Materials Science with Foundation. Successful completion of the foundation year will offer progression to BEng or MEng Materials Science and Engineering.
International students who may not have had the chance to study A-level-equivalent qualifications may qualify for our one-year International Science and Engineering Foundation Programme, commonly known as the ISEFP.
On successfully completing the ISEFP, and subject to meeting the progression requirements, you are guaranteed a place on your chosen degree programme at Queen Mary.

Queen Mary University of London welcomes applications from students currently studying Level 3 BTEC qualifications and will consider you for entry to the majority of our undergraduate courses. The typical entry requirements will vary according to the course you are applying for. Some of our courses require specific subject knowledge which you may not be able to cover as part of a Level 3 BTEC qualification and we may therefore require additional Level 3 qualifications to ensure that you are suitably prepared for relevant courses. A small number of our courses do not accept BTEC qualifications for entry, either as a standalone qualification, or in combination with other qualifications at Level 3. Information on our typical entry requirements and guidance for applying can be found at http://www.qmul.ac.uk/undergraduate/entry/btec/ If you are at all unsure about the acceptability of your BTEC qualification for entry, please contact the Admissions team for individual advice (admissions@qmul.ac.uk).
