Research in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences covers three main research themes ; earth and planetary science, environment and society, and life on earth.

Biomolecular tools and approaches are fundamental to many areas of research that study microbial, animal and plant systems. Furthermore, modern research within the fields of ecology and evolution is underpinned by the biomolecular sciences, through the use of advanced methodologies in genomics, metabolomics and analytical chemistry, as well as computational biology.
