**Course summary**<br/>This flexible three-year degree programme is designed for students who are unable to undertake a full year abroad and will provide you with opportunities to specialise in one language or combine two or three languages. The course enables you to develop your linguistic and communication skills to the highest levels, while learning about the history, politics and cultures of the countries that you are studying.<br/><br/>A very attractive feature of the Modern Languages course at Chester, is our placement period at the end of the second year. This means that, if you choose, you have the opportunity to undertake a placement abroad on the three-year version of the programme. This is followed by a flexible Summer School module undertaken between the second and third years of the programme in which, with the support of your tutors, you learn through a flexible menus of project work, an intensive language course, MOOCs, and self-directed learning to fit your priorities while preparing you for the final year.<br/><br/>**Single language**<br/>French (post A level entry)<br/>Spanish (post A level entry) <br/>Alongside your main language, in the first year you will take a subsidiary language at beginner level chosen from German, Portuguese or Italian which you may choose to continue through your degree.<br/><br/>**Double language**<br/>Chinese (beginner or Post A level entry)<br/>German (post A level entry)<br/>French (Post A level or beginner entry)<br/>Spanish (Post A level or beginner entry)<br/><br/>**Three languages** <br/>Alongside your two main languages, you can take a subsidiary language at beginner level chosen from German, Portuguese or Italian.<br/><br/>You can find all the possible combinations of languages listed below in the **Subject options** section.
