This degree offers you a unique opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of economic theory and methods in data science. You’ll gain the skills and knowledge to pursue a career in economics or finance.
The programme will provide you with classical training in economic theory and its application. Additionally, you will be taught key skills and methods in data science, such as how to analysis large data sets and use algorithmic or machine learning.

This degree offers you a unique opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of economic theory and methods in data science. You’ll gain the skills and knowledge to pursue a career in economics or finance.
The programme will provide you with classical training in economic theory and its application. Additionally, you will be taught key skills and methods in data science, such as how to analysis large data sets and use algorithmic or machine learning.
As part of your first year modules, you'll learn to use Bloomberg trading terminals in our Financial Lab (FinLab) and have the chance to gain a Bloomberg Markets Concepts qualification. You'll also use our experimental laboratory to put basic economic concepts into practice.
As part of this course you can also:

• Gain exemptions from professional accounting bodies and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries
You'll graduate with the skills and knowledge to pursue a career in finance or economics. You could also go on to further study. Graduate destinations include Goldman Sachs, HSBC, PwC and Bloomberg LLP.
Our graduates earn an average of £34,800 with over 95% in employment or further study within 15 months of graduating (Graduate Outcomes 2022-23, published 2025).

Scottish Higher
We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject). Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4
Access to HE Diploma
Typical offer: 60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3, all of which must be at Distinction Mathematics must be studied to level 3, A-level standard to be considered
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
Typical offer: Pass, with 36 points overall with 18 points at Higher Level, including grade 6 in ‘Analysis and Approaches’ or ‘Applications and Interpretation’ International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP): Offers will be made on the individual Diploma Course subject(s) and the career-related study qualification. The CP core will not form part of the offer. Where there is a subject pre-requisite(s), applicants will be required to study the subject(s) at Higher Level in the Diploma course subject and/or take a specified unit in the career-related study qualification. Applicants may also be asked to achieve a specific grade in those elements. Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)
DDD in the BTEC National Extended Diploma plus A in A level Mathematics If you are studying a BTEC National Extended Diploma (DDD) you will also need an additional A Level in Mathematics (grade A). However, we can accept an Engineering BTEC National Extended Diploma without the additional A Level requirement.

Extended Project
The University of Southampton values the Extended Project Qualification. If you are taking an EPQ in addition to 3 A levels, you will receive the following offer in addition to the standard A-level offer: AAB including grade A in Mathematics plus grade A in the EPQ or ABB including grade A in Mathematics and grade B in Further Mathematics plus grade A in the EPQ.
