On this degree, you will learn how to detect and assess cardiac and respiratory health issues across a wide range of patients and clinical settings. From your first year, you will begin building the skills needed to detect, quantify and treat cardiac disease, working with the latest technology within the field.
This is a course grounded in clinical practice. With extensive clinical placements and hands-on learning, you will graduate ready to step into a role within the NHS and make a difference from day one.

Split your time equally between academic study and clinical placements, building the knowledge and practical experience needed for a career in cardiac physiology.
Start by exploring cardiovascular, respiratory and sleep physiology, before specialising in cardiac physiology in your second and third years.
Learn to use specialist diagnostic equipment and interpret clinical data to support key decisions in patient care.
Teaching and application taking place at University Hospital Southampton in a dedicated specialist skills facility and Highfield Campus.
Gain over 1,500 hours of placement experience, working with patients in settings such as outpatient departments, wards, theatres and intensive care units.
Student support:
From day one, you will be supported both on campus and during your placements by a network of academic staff, including your Personal Academic Tutor and senior tutors.
You will also learn alongside a close community of healthcare students, with opportunities to reflect on your experiences through initiatives such as Schwartz Rounds, supporting your development as a compassionate healthcare professional.

On successful completion of the course, you will be able to apply for registration with the Academy for Healthcare Science and work for the NHS.
The NHS Learning Support Fund may be available to support costs associated with placements.

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject). Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4.
