Summary
Great cities are shaped by both engineering and design. Civil engineering with architecture brings these disciplines together, combining technical expertise with creative thinking to design spaces that are functional, sustainable and built to last.
On this course, you will explore how structures and urban environments are designed and constructed, developing the skills to create solutions that respond to the challenges of modern cities. You will specialise in architecture and urban design while building strong knowledge in structural and geomechanical engineering.
In your first two years, you will develop a solid foundation in engineering science alongside the core principles of civil engineering. Through workshops and design projects, you will begin to build your skills in sketching, model making and computing.
In your third year, you will focus on civil engineering within an urban design context, deepening your understanding of structures and geotechnics. In your final year, you will apply architectural principles through design projects, while exploring project economics and management.
Key features of the course
Combine design and engineering. Develop expertise in both civil engineering and architecture, preparing you for a career in structural design.
Build strong foundations. Study core engineering science and civil engineering principles in your early years.
Learn through design. Workshops and projects help you develop skills in sketching, model making and digital tools.
Specialise as you progress. Focus on urban design, structures and geotechnics in later years.
Apply your knowledge. Final-year design projects allow you to bring together technical and creative skills, alongside an understanding of project management and economics.
Student support
Your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) will support you throughout your time at Southampton, offering academic guidance, career advice and signposting to wellbeing and pastoral services when needed.
You will be part of a collaborative learning environment, working with students and staff across engineering and design disciplines.
Further information
You will study in a setting that supports both creative and technical development, with access to spaces for design, modelling and project work.
