In a dynamic global landscape, understanding the complex relationship between the individual and society has never been more pertinent and important. York's BA Social Psychology programme examines our behaviour, relationships, and sense of self, from a distinctively sociological perspective. Rooted in the empirical study of social interaction, it examines how language, embodiment, social norms and values, power and inequalities challenge and change who we are and sculpt our everyday lives. You will become an analytical problem solver as well as a creative and critical thinker drawing on the expertise of sociological social psychologists. Through the degree you will learn about the importance of multifaceted evidence-based explanations of how individuals relate to society and consider ways to challenge inequalities and discrimination by examining everyday conversations, online interactions, media representations and lived experiences. By completing a range of bespoke social psychology modules, and selecting from a range of optional modules, you will develop areas of interest and further your personal and professional ambitions. In your final year you will apply your research skills to a cutting edge social psychological issue of your choice. You will use your intellectual curiosity to develop research aims and questions to effectively communicate the critical aspects of the issue, and investigate these aims and questions directly. As a graduate of the BA Social Psychology programme, you will be empowered as a skilled written and oral communicator, leader and team player, whilst gaining a range of computing and digital skills. You will be able to contribute to society as a creative, ethical, critical thinker and problem solver within a range of roles in research, policy and the public and voluntary sectors. This is a programme for individuals who want to better understand selfhood and identity against a backdrop of social interactions, contexts and institutions to bring about positive social change.
