Linguistics focuses on how we learn a language, how language varies between speakers and geographic regions, and how it influences thinking and the ways in which we interact we each other. Psychology helps you understand how, why and what happens when our brain and body systems stop working so well, are damaged, or develop in divergent ways.
Linguistics enables you to study the science behind language, comparing different languages and linguistic systems. Topics covered include the possible sounds used in speech and their combination (phonetics, phonology), how words are built up (morphology), what distinguishes sentences from just strings of words (syntax), meaning (semantics and pragmatics), how language is acquired and processed both by neuro-typical and neuro-diverse individuals, the effect that society, culture and norms have upon language use (sociolinguistics) and bilingualism, multilingualism and how languages change over time
Our psychology degrees are designed to develop well-rounded knowledge of psychology and understanding of how psychological theory and practice is applied to experiences and behaviours, under normal circumstances and during stress, injury or illness, throughout the lifespan. Our world-leading researchers will share with you their latest developments in psychological theory, research and practice.
A Linguistics and Psychology degree is excellent preparation for the wide range of careers that require a solid understanding of human behaviour, development and communication or language-focused professional skills.
