PGCE Secondary Social Science with QTS* PGCE

Our one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) prepares you to teach the secondary school social science curriculum for the 14-19 age range.<br/><br/>You’ll explore ways to teach areas of the social sciences and develop your subject knowledge. You will also consider how social sciences link with related subject areas.<br/><br/>During the year, you’ll attend a series of lectures, with topics such as assessing exam papers and what school and college leaders look for in an ideal candidate.<br/><br/>When you’re at Manchester Met, you’ll spend time developing an inclusive social science curriculum incorporating equality, diversity and inclusion in the social science classroom. You and your peers will discuss and reflect upon the most effective social science teaching strategies to use for the best impact on learning.<br/><br/>You’ll also benefits from guest speakers, who in previous years have included exam board advisors and social science teachers from local schools and colleges.<br/><br/>FEATURES AND BENEFITS<br/><br/>Employability - You will have the knowledge, skills and experience to teach social science at secondary school and post-16.<br/><br/>Teaching experience - You will spend at least the minimum Department for Education (DfE) required time in schools (approximately 120 days) on placements in schools, gaining experience in secondary schools.<br/><br/>Postgraduate credits - When you graduate, you’ll achieve 60 masters’ level credits (this is one-third of a masters degree). You can put these towards a masters degree to help you develop your new career.<br/><br/>Partnerships - We have partnerships with over 500 schools, colleges and educational organisations, meaning we are able to provide students with a range of school experiences.<br/><br/>Research-led teaching - Our research centre, the Education and Social Research Institute (ESRI), ranks in the UK’s top 10 for research power in education (Research Excellence Framework, 2021).<br/><br/>Application process - You can apply directly to Manchester Met or through one of our lead partner schools.
