The best decision I've ever made

(5)·By Mackie R·Drama· Jun 2024
Royal Welsh was a shot in the dark. It looked great on paper when I thought about enrolling, but moving from Mexico to study Acting in Wales during the pandemic seemed like a risky decision (especially since I'd also been accepted in very popular London Drama schools which seemed like a safer choice). But after graduating I can safely say that RWCMD was the best uni I could've gone to, and I cannot recommend it enough.

I firmly believe that RWCMD has the best quality of training there is. Not to say that other schools don't have it as well, but I genuinely don't see how I could've gotten better training or been more prepared for the difficult industry I chose. That being said, RWCMD is not one to chase their students- they will push you as much as you push yourself. Royal Welsh is for hard workers- and if that sounds like you, you will get more than your money's worth.

The excellence along which I was studying was intimidating, but my year group was incredibly close and supportive, and we were very close throughout. The tutors were professional, supportive and kind- always looking after our mental and physical health (which was massively important under the pressure of a conservatoire and the crazy schedules we worked with for three years). But despite that, they were firm and honest, ensuring to get a great balance between mentorship and training excellence which you could really see in the quality of the work of the alumni in third year.

Socially, it's wonderful. Cardiff is very fun, and the uni community is tight, lively, diverse and welcoming. It's a very supportive environment that encourages growth, self discovery and lots of fun. There are activities every night in the SU, and Cardiff is famous for its nightlife. If that's not your thing, the great thing about it is that Cardiff can also provide a very quiet and warm environment. The Welsh are truly the loveliest people, and Cardiff has everything you could need from a Capital city- with a bit more green and a world of nature a train ride away.

I could honestly praise it all day. I remember my uni days very fondly and will be eternally grateful for how much I grew as both an actor and a person during my time there. It truly changed my life for the better. So if this appeals to you, I definitely encourage you to give it a go- it might just change yours too.

Music, Year 2

Tiring but so worth it! A lot of people tend to shy away from going to university because it's either too much money or too much stress but I don't see it too much like that; I see it as an investment in my future, both from an academical perspective and a social one.

Drama, Year 1

Very fun, there were lots of events put on by the uni and also loads going on in Cardiff. There was always something to do and everything was affordable.

I'm at private halls as the college does not have their own halls of residence. But we do receive a discount for liberty Severn Point which is a good halls. The rooms are large enough and the shared areas are nice and modern however very small for 6 people. We have en-suites which are convenient and a luxury. There is security and post boxes which are very good.

The library is very good and organised the SU bar is cheap and always accessible. There is a shop in the uni that has anything we might need. There are not many sports opportunities and the college would benefit from adding to them. There are many classrooms and they are all large and well kept with modern equipment and the students have the option to book out any room for their use

The course is very comprehensive and covers all areas of technical theatre and stage management. The course is largely practice which means we learn on the job and there are 4 placements a year which also means we get a lot of chances to try out different roles and practice our preferred ones. We also have many chance to do external placements and learn how to work in a professional theatre or even abroad. The course teaches so much and ends up creating an extremely employable resume for the students.

Cardiff City is extremely busy and buzzing with life and has all sorts to do. There is no shortage of transport, or bars and pubs and definitely no shortage of food places. Cinema is affordable and enjoyable and everything is close. Particular advantages are the distance from the bay, Penarth, and Barry Island. All places that provide a break from the city with lots to do and see

It is extremely hard and the hours are very long. The one thing I would say is that there is no point in signing up for this course without a considerable intent to be committed to the studies. However the university as well as the city areare amazing and there is never a shortage of things to do.

Drama, Year 2

Although the college is small, they put a lot of work into making freshers. Some events were not great and ended up doing our own thinly most of the time. Halls in first year. 10 min walk from the school. Nice with en-suite. But quite expensive for what you get considering Cardiff housing is cheap. Amazing facilities. Great library, always practice rooms available, great theatres, good su. Always people who are available to help The course is one of the best in the country. Teachers are mostly still working professionals, which means you get first hand knowledge of what the industry is like now and feel prepared for it. They also treat you like a human being, allowing you to be yourself and see what you bring naturally Cardiff is quite chill. Still lots to do. Lots of space to relax

Music, Year 2

It was great to meet so many new people from different places who had a lot in common. The first few weeks was such a fun experience and there were so many icebreaker opportunities. As a gated community, the staff are always making sure that we feel safe and secure within the grounds. The living conditions are beyond what I expected when I first arrived and I felt right at home with my new flat mates from day 1. The classrooms are great and are easily accessible for the students to interact with each other and to collaborate. The student union's a great place to visit and catch up with other's, especially when you want to have a low-key evening. The course is always collaborative and creative which is essential for others like myself who are practical based. The lectures are always easy to follow as room is always left for students to voice their ideas. Cardiff is a lovely city - there's always room to breath which is hard in a city environment, but there's always something going on which will keep students busy and entertained.

Freshers was okay. I feel like it could've been better and a bit more varied. The nights felt a little cheap and samey each year. Accommodation at RWCMD is good in first year! Halls is literally a ten minute walk down the road. The other years private housing is great and cheap in the diff! Lots of practice facilities and study areas! However nothing in terms of sports. However it is in front of a MASSIVE park so there's a lot of green space for running, walking and cycling. The teachers are great and class sizes aren't big at all meaning there's lots of support available. Loads of space for performing Cardiff is an amazing city. The people are super friendly and the night life is amazing.

Very good, the college has plenty of resources to help my learning progress. I have at least 20 hours of lessons a week which is far more than most universities so I feel I get my money's worth. The facilities and buildings are top of the range and it is in a great location in Cardiff.
