Computing / Computer Science, Year 3

(5)·By Andreea Z·Computing· Jul 2021
Freshers week was mostly organised by College and it had a variety of events for all kinda of people, mixing people from all subjects. At the CS department we have only had one ice breaker activity in groups which was alright, nothing particularly good or bad about that. Almost everyone lives in their College's accommodation, either on or off site, and everyone in College accommodation lives alone (not sharing their room with anyone else). Some rooms have ensuite bathrooms, some rooms are sets (so bedroom + lounge), some accommodation blocks also have common rooms. There are many options at a range of prices, usually between £1000-2000 per term. Also varies by College Libraries are fantastic study spaces, both the College ones and the University one. Some departments also have great dept libraries, but not the Computer Science department. In terms of books, you can either find anything you need or ask for them to buy it. Student union is very strong. Sports areas are great and available upon paying a membership fee Intense both in depth and breadth, excellent dedicated lecturers, solid mix of theory and practice, great materials to learn from at most courses, fantastic supervision system. Supervisions are by far the best part of Cambridge undergrad. While there are also local people in the city, students spend most of their time in the student part of the city, around Colleges. It's great to see a lot of University people wherever you go, while also having a large variety of restaurants, cafes, shops

History, Graduate

It was really fun - they arranged lots of opportunity for us students to get to know each other and there was something for everyonr Really good accommodation at Robinson college - big rooms and very modern All facilities were amazing and all using modern technology The course was very varied and provided lots of opportunities to specialise and pick modules based on interest. It also allowed one on one supervisions which were very helpful Cambridge is a lovely university city and is catered towards students - feels like a mini bubble away from the outside world

English Studies, Year 2

(5)·By Ele F·English Studies· Jul 2021
It was really enjoyable, a great range of subject related as well as more general welfare activities which helped me meet a lot of people. It was also a great balance of the amount of compulsory activities and optional ones. Everyone was very patient and friendly. My accommodation was amazing, en suite single rooms which were small but cosy. We had washing facilities on site and our canteen was really close by. The library was amazing as it was cosy but open 24 hours so you could go at any time. Amazing range of books and helpful librarians. We have great sports facilities too that were easy to book. You had the option to choose what you wanted to write on. The lectures were really wide reaching and varied. Cambridge definitely seems like a student city, there are a few night clubs which have specific university nights and generally there are cafes and restaurants that are affordable. There is lovely greenery and I love that everyone cycles!

Psychology / Criminology, Year 2

(4.8)·By Amber G·Psychology· Jul 2021
It was unexceptional, but still good. It gave me the opportunity to meet new people, but as I am quite shy a lot of situations felt fairly overwhelming. Accommodation is amazing at Cambridge, with most rooms having a view of a chapel or other stately building. Although old, rooms are well-decorated and facilities are good. The library is amazing, and have essentially all the books needed to complete essays. Sports grounds are good, but fairly spread out, and the student bar is not too good. Lectures are very informative and handouts help massively with learning. All of the lecturers are experts in their field and therefore provide insight into subjects. Cambridge City is beautiful, but fairly small. There are only a few nightclubs, but many scenic walks to enjoy with friends.

History, Graduate

It was organised at a college level with over two weeks of back to back event. There were lots of opportunities to meet more people in my college. Accommodation varies by college. Some colleges are more expensive than others but quality is generally good. There are tonnes of libraries and most colleges have an on-site gym. Catering is also good with most colleges providing meals. We had several field trips. Moreover, we were taught by leading experts in their respective fields. Cambridge is small but there are many entertainment opportunities. The food offering is particularly good.

Education / Teacher Training, Year 3

(4.8)·By Ana H·Education / Teacher Training· Jul 2021
Freshers week was so fun! My university organised so many fun events that got us all talking and relaxed. I made real friends that I believe I'll keep for a lifetime, that I also happened to meet on the first day at University! How wonderful! At my uni, students stay in accommodation halls. My accommodation, although not the most spacious, has everything I need! I have appreciated having massive windows every year in my room. I've also had huge desk space which has allowed me to work properly in my room! The library is amazing! It's so spacious and very well resourced. With it being open 24h/7, I spend most of my days im there! The sports facilities are constantly being improved and I take so much joy in using them. The student union are also constantly organising new and fun things for us to enjoy and to protect our welfare. The lectures being online and recorded this year means that I was able to not miss anything and take part in my studies fully! My course is also very small, so I am able to get very invested in it, and feel like im fully part of the community. Cambridge is such a vibrant and lively place to live. Even in these hard times, I've had so many lovely moments cycling around the city and stopping in little coffee shops, or the market. With the city being mainly entirely made up of students from such diverse and international backgrounds.

Psychology, Year 1

(4.8)·By Clare J·Psychology· Mar 2019
Freshers was really fun, I had minimal contact hours so was able to go out and enjoy the events. It’s pretty nice, reasonably priced but only 8 week contracts so I have to fully move out 3 times a year. Really good- amazing facilities for whatever it is you want to do. Really interesting topics given by amazing lecturers who are normally researchers in that field. The city is amazing there’s always stuff going on for everyone. Clubbing is cheesy music though and limited variety. Half of your course in first year PBS isn’t psychology it’s optional modules

Medicine, Year 2

(4.8)·By Gabrielle L·Medicine· Jul 2021
Very busy meeting new people and getting to know a new place. A little scary not having anyone from home to talk to in person. College accommodation is very nice with good furnishings. The kitchens in main college are very small but offsite are pretty large. The libraries are really good as they are 24/7 and the librarians can order any book you ask for. The classrooms are nice as they are large and traditional. Medicine is good as it is very science based and there are usually in person dissections. There are also practicals which are hands on and put into context the theory we learn. Cambridge is very tight knit as a university city, with lovely shops for everything you need. There are plenty of restaurants or cafes to choose from, and there is a nice market in the market square to buy food, clothes, books and more.

Chemical / Process / Energy, Year 3

(4.8)·By Marc S·Chemical / Process / Energy· Jul 2021
A lot of Events, varying from museum tours to bar crawls to club nights. It was a very welcoming environment and it was good to engage with people from different backgrounds. Uni workload was mundane during that time I was based in a student house, 5 people on three floors. Recently refurbished with a kitchen area but no living room. There was a shared garden with 3 other houses. Library at the college was limited, but the department library was quite large. Classrooms were of a high standard. Sports center was excellent. There was no real students union, but a nice college bar The Course was very well organized, with engineering classes covering novel areas, as well as management and finance classes. It prepared me well for work life after uni. Lecturers were of a high standard, but the course was very demanding. City life was very varied, loads of culture things, but also a lot of pubs and clubs. The city was very small, so it was easy to meet people from other colleges. Overall, an excellent experience

Veterinary Sciences, Graduate

The university freshers was great! The vet specific freshers was a great way to meet others on your course Dependent on which college but mine was of a high standard for all 3 years I was in college accommodation. Reasonably priced for the region as well. Liberaries are really good. Lots of them and always have books needed. The lecture theatres and vet school are also great The course is small and personal so you get to know the lecturers. It's academically focussed so you get to learn a lot more science compared to other universities. You also get the chance to do an intercalated degree which is such a good opportunity to study something you are genuinely interested in. Cambridge is a very small city. It is like a different universe with tourists and students. It's very safe and easy to get around as well as incredibly pretty
