About University of Portsmouth

Portsmouth is the only university to offer Connected Degrees: a three-year course with an optional flexible fourth-year placement, available on most courses.

This gives students more time to explore career options, secure the right placement and stay connected with friends, before moving smoothly into professional life with full university support.

Alongside paid placements, UK students can choose a self-employed placement to launch a start-up or freelance career with expert guidance. Those who prefer a traditional placement can take it after year two.

Campus Locations

Portsmouth Campus

Portsmouth Campus

Portsmouth’s campus is woven into the heart of the city, where learning spaces, the library, sports facilities and halls sit alongside shops, bars, restaurants, cafés and venues like the Victorian New Theatre Royal and Grade II listed Guildhall. It’s always buzzing, yet beaches, green spaces and sea views are only a short walk away.

The campus is evolving too – from advanced facilities such as the Future Technology Centre and Motion Capture Studios to the sustainable Ravelin Sports Centre set in a community orchard. A £250 million masterplan means new experiences and possibilities will continue to develop throughout your studies.

Transport links are excellent, with central London reachable in 90 minutes and ferries to France and Spain, plus Gatwick, Heathrow and Southampton airports all within reach. Free campus bus services make getting to your lectures easy and cost-free.

Job Prospects

Job Prospects

Portsmouth wants to get you career-ready. Their graduate employment rates are some of the UK's best, with 93 per cent in work or study (HESA Graduate Outcomes Survey 2022/23). Courses are designed to give you skills employers are looking for, often using simulated working environments and professional equipment. Most courses give the option of a paid placement year to get a taste of working life and build up your CV.

Portsmouth has great links with employers across a wide range of industries. Many give talks on campus, offering you opportunities to make professional connections. Lots of courses are accredited, approved or recognised by Professional Statutory Regulatory Bodies, certifying you've got the specialist knowledge and skills needed for those professions.

Their Careers and Employability Service is free to access from the moment you register with Portsmouth, to five years after you graduate. It offers workshops, online resources, and one-to-ones to help with job seeking and career building.

And when you want to take a break from it all, you can find safe, supportive spaces like the campus Chaplaincy (for people of all faiths and none) or simply stop and watch the waves as the sun sets on the Solent.
