Why choose this course
Satellites continue revolutionise global connectivity, and play a fundamental role in the smooth everyday running of a range of critical services - including transport navigation and GPS, weather and climate monitoring, space and science.
At Surrey, we’re internationally renowned for our work in satellite communications, broadcasting, terrestrial mobile networks and the internet: all the essential components of modern communication and information systems. We can help you on your path to becoming a satellite communications engineer, and prepare you for a broad range of exciting roles.
* We host the Surrey Space Centre – a unique facility made up of academics and engineers from our own spin-out company, Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL).
* Surrey also hosts the Institute for Communication Systems (ICS), home of the 5/6G Innovation Centre which includes long-standing world-class research in satellite communications unique within the UK.
* Recently, Surrey has launched the Surrey Space Institute (SSI) in 2025, harnessing more than 45 years of satellite leadership, and expanding our cross-disciplinary research and teaching in satellite and space communications.
* Our masters in Satellite Communications Engineering is taught by academics and researchers with extensive theoretical expertise and practical knowledge – so you’ll get a learning experience that really is out of this world.
* We’re preparing you for the future by integrating AI into every course, building digital skills, confidence and creativity that employers value in tomorrow’s workplace.
What you will study\
Satellite communications are essential to modern integrated terrestrial and non terrestrial networks to enable fully global connectivity, which must be reliable and secure b. This programme will give you an in-depth understanding of the engineering aspects of these important technologies.
With established links to major satellite manufacturers, operators and service providers, ICS is home to the world’s largest academic research group specialising in 5G and 6G communications including substantial work on non-terrestrial networks.
Our 5G/6G Innovation Centre was founded by major national and international players in the communications industry and also has partnerships with major corporations in satellite communications. The Centre focuses on the research and development of communication networks and wireless technologies capable of meeting the communication needs of the evolving digital economy and the world of tomorrow. A key element of this work involves examining how satellites will integrate with future 5G/6G technology forming non-terrestrial networks.
