Uni of York Review

(5)·By Sylvia B·Nursing· Jun 2023
It is a university in one of the most gorgeous areas of the UK. It has that 'posh feel to it, if you know what I mean! The tutors and students are quite friendly. Because it is the city is small it's far easier to navigate as well. My program leader was so thorough with her explanation it made total sense what she was exalpining even though it was quite a hard topic.

Economics, Graduate

It was amazing. Great culture and benefits of York being a collegiate system that you get to know everyone. It's also an incredibly safe place It was good. It varies per house and per college, I stayed in James block which is nice as it's by the water, and away from the hustle bustle of main campus. Library - Good. All books, could be bigger. Sport - I played competitive hockey for about 3 years and the facilities are great. State of the art pitches and tracks. Open, new lecture theatres and best all, all lectures are recorded and lecturers have to wear mics meaning it's clear. Amaaazing!!! York is often ranked as the most beautiful town in the UK! It's safe, has lots of lovely cafes and bars.

University experience

(5)·By Reyan U·Medicine· Jun 2023
My university experience has been very interesting so far I have came across many different societies and people from different backgrounds i s as an individual from an ethnic background it has been difficult to sit in per say to university experiences when there is such a large drinking and partying culture which is something not everyone is interested in.it If I was able to change one thing about my experience I would make sure other activities beside drinking were possible.

Psychology / Criminology, Graduate

Freshers at York uni was great. There was many activities to do including meeting other Psych departments not just forensic which i was studying. There were meet and greets and parties as well as time to meet teams and lecturers. Was a lot of fun and met lots of friends. I loved my accommodation at york! It was party central we had a big house and lots of people near us who were on similar courses so we could regularly meet. The house was very close to where my lectures were near the gym and a 20 min walk away from town. I loved it lot! The library was the best place at york. I loved it it was cosy and never struggled to find facilities. The classrooms were okay quite standard and lecture rooms were same as most unis. sports was big at york so there was lots of events. There was also lots of political issues so unions were often on those. It wasnt like things were left to just slide. It was good. The course helped me reach my level 1 to gaining a masters to reach qualification to become a forensic psychologist. Going to york uni is prestigious and gave me good experience. there was a mix of teachers and lecturers and professors. Most lecturers were engaging and made learning fun and interesting. We had opportunities to meet people in the field which was the most helpful. York is a beautiful city with lots of scenic bits. It had a great selection of restaurants and take aways and for such a small place, lots and lots of pubs and bars! Was always a fun night out and day out for tea. It has so much culture.

History, Year 3

I didn't really attend any events with my course. I stuck with people in my college - it was great fun but definitely intimidating. Accommodation on campus east is great and the environment is really relaxed there and it has a great bar! The accommodation on campus west is vile though I hated visiting there let alone living there Library is decent but the ugliest building ever! Student union bars are great because there's such variety! And the two sports centres are great and really big The seminars were good as they really engaged people. Lectures are ok just a bit dry (as I expect they can be anywhere) The city is so cute and amazing for like nights out in bars/pubs. The clubs are good fun, very messy proper uni nights out! I just wish there were more clubs

Biology / Biotechnology, Year 2

As I'm on biochemistry, lots of safety and introduction talks, safe chemical disposal for example. Lots of partying, clubbing and fun activities. Loved it. Varies a lot between colleges. I was in ensuite vanbrugh accomodation and it was spacious, clean, warm and lovely. This is top of the campus accomodation however, and other colleges have much worse. I use both the chemistry and biology teaching labs and they're excellent, with amazingly funded, top of the line equipment. The biology department continues to grow, with stunning research equipment and labs. The lecturers and tutors absolutely love their subjects, and it is incredibly inspiring, and motivates all of us. The quality of teaching is very high, and the enthusiasm and support is exemplary. York is small but lively. Very safe too, I feel comfortable walking around at night, and there's always something fun to do! The minster is stunning, the shamble is gorgeous. Not to mention plenty of restaurants, bars, clubs, Asian supermarkets, cafes etc. It's the best city I've ever lived in.

Politics / International Relations, Year 3

Freshers week was really well organised. Because the accommodation is divided into colleges you go out as a college. You get T-shirts and have assigned nights out to certain clubs where you get in for free with your wrist band. Second and thirds years called Stycs come to your flat to pre with you and then take you into town showing you how to get to the clubs you are going to or going to bars for pres first. Some nights are on campus and some have Themed dress up nights. On campus we had a roller disco and they have day time and non drinking events but I slept through them. There are currently 9 colleges and another one being built. Vanbrugh the one I was in is next to the music department and has its own pub. It has nice self catered new builds with en suites and the catered bits are in 60 blocks. Derwent is all 60s blocks and mainly catered it's got good sports teams and is quite laddish. It has two bars, D bar which has a lot of events and courtyard which is the best one on campus and does great drinks and food. Did a club night called time warp which played decades music. James is the sport one and is all catered they sometimes do event in the James bar and is right next to the gym. Always looks like a good time. Alcuin is next to the library and has the best cafe on campus but the joke is it's always dead. Halifax is a bit further out, about 10 minutes from campus. It has its own uni shop and a free bus. It's probably the Cheapest accommodation and not as nice as some of the others but people get really close and there's a community feel because everyone hangs out in the JCR and the grounds which you don't get as much with other colleges. I went for a movie night of shrek 2 and they had an ice cream van. Loads of my friends lived there and had a great time. Wentworth is for postgrads and has a veggie/ vegan cafe. On the other campus about 10 minutes away there are the last 3 colleges with one being built. East campus looks like a black mirror episode all the buildings are new. It has one bar called glasshouse which is really nice they have good Cocktails, karaoke Fridays and have a club night twice a month called marmite which plays cheesy music, snows Pokemon on the tv and has prawn crackers (I think it recreates a club that closed down a few years ago hence the vibe). It also has decent food. Campus east also has a gym with a swimming pool but is more expensive than the campus west gym. They also have a big shop, a Greg's, the doctors, a tanning bed shop and some takeaways. Goodricke is the cheapest, Constantine has really nice kitchens and double beds and can have en-suites and langwith is the most expensive, you basically get a house. Langwith and Constantine have TVs in the living room kitchen area and nice sofas, goodricke just has a kitchen like the other colleges. The students Union is not as big as ones like Leeds it's not a hub because of the college system, venues, bars etc are spread out over campus. YUSU seem to be fairly good and during covid, organised a whole outside canopied bar with music, food and drink in accordance with government guidelines. They also organised well-being packs for students on campus during lockdown. The gym is good but always busy and I think people that go a lot go to off campus gyms because sports teams use them a lot at the same time. The learning facilities are good and I go to the library a lot. It's divided into three buildings next to each other connected inside, fairhurst is for eating and drinking and group chatting, it has big whiteboards and movable chairs for group projects, morel has the books and study desks. You can eat and drink and whisper but most people sit and work in silence. Burton is no food, just water and silence study. There's a cafe downstairs. There are also single and group study rooms and computer rooms and you can borrow laptops. First year everyone doing politics and IR does the same 4 modules. The first term is not recorded on lecture capture but it gets you into a good habit of going to everything and have a pretty full timetable and make friends quickly. The politics do fun events and talks as well as a BBQ after exams, everyone went out clubbing afterwards. You do a lot in first year but it means second year Feels easier. You have so many different modules to choose for second and third year, I'm particularly enjoying my third year modules and third year is all course work. The city is really cute and picturesque which actually makes a difference to feeling at home and walking around on the walls or even through the centre can be relaxing. There are some really good museums as it can be touristy in the summer. There are a few clubs and all the students go to the same ones on specified student nights. This obviously isn't for everyone but I liked always seeing everyone I knew at clubs. Sports Society's go to salvos on Wednesdays and dress up which is always really fun. The bars are really good, there are some good restaurants, most of the chains I.e. Nando's, Wagamamas, McDonalds etc and lots of independent cafes. There is a small top shop and primark but I prefer going to Leeds for shopping although the urban outfitters and zara are a good size.

Biology / Biotechnology, Year 3

(5)·By Charli T·Biology· Jul 2021
Was so much fun, we did loads of different activities each day with our STYCs. There was stuff to do for everyone whether you drank or not, was never a dull moment, wish I could do it again. Was quite expensive per week, I was in a flat with 12 other people and shared a kitchen but had an en-suite. This was about £164 ish a week I'm not too sure, however this was one of the only option she left after clearing. Accommodation was in great condition and although expensive was great. The library is massive and has loads of sections so you'll always find what you need, if you don't have the book in the library the uni has access to lots of online resources. Lecture halls are massive and have plug sockets for the laptops, labs are also massive and well equipped. The uni uses circuit laundry which is awful and a rip off. The course and lectures are always interesting and full of up to date information. We use lots of very recent research papers to support our learning so everything is new and up to date. The course can be quite content heavy, however it is all relevant and supported by workshops. Absolutely love the city life, if you don't want to be in a busy area there's loads of quiet areas you can go on walks and look at nature. But in the town it's busy and has loads of shops and clubs. Since it is york there's also a lot of pubs which is great for students

the university is absolutely stunning. the campus is beautiful, all the staff from the cooks, cleaners, professors and library staff are lovely and couldnt be more helpful. Tutors are amazingly supportive and are practicing in their fields which makes my experience even better. The university has an amazing library and facilites are incredible. The environmental bulding is beautiful and makes my experience better due to the new facilites.
