Psychology / Criminology, Graduate

I loved it! Lots of socials and getting to know new people. We had some taster sessions and introductory lectures which were very useful and informative. Not to mention all the club sessions and freebies! I loved my university accommodation- very secure and modern. All accommodation is within walking distance of the university and York city centre, so I couldn't have asked for better! I spent most of my study time in the library- it has everything from group study spaces to a silent floor. You are able to book out any room on campus for study/group projects. There are top class sport facilities which the university are very proud of and the students union was newly built and opened in late 2016! We had friendly and approachable lecturers and the course content was very varied. My favourite year was third year, as we were able to choose our modules and had more control over assignment topics! For example, I was able to incorporate my passion for British Sign language into my psychology of education module, examining research on the mental health of deaf children in mainstream education. I couldn't imagine living anywhere other than York once I was there and settled. It is a smaller, friendly city with lots going on all year round. From Christmas markets to food festivals and York maze hallowscream, there is always something to do.

English Studies, Year 3

Loved every moment, went by in a blur but I'd do it all again in a heartbeat Really loved living there as I felt safe but had my own space too. Got on well with my flatmates and lived really close to town too Thoroughly enjoyed using the library as it is really spacious and the staff are really helpful. All of the uni's facilities are always clean and modernised as much as possible Loved the content that was included and the range of topics on my modules. The previous modules I had studies helped to shape my out of academic reading and my dissertation topic too Absolutely loved living in the city as I felt like it was a new sense of home for me. Being close to a big city also provides lots of opportunities for socialising and trying new things

I'm a mature student so just took that week to get used to the surroundings! I'm a mature student and live in my own home. AMAZING. Couldn't be more accessible! Very structured, very supportive lecturers. Always a source of support somewhere! I love living and studying in York. The perfect size, so much to do but not too overwhelming.

Art / Design, Year 2

It was a great experience, there were plenty of events to welcome us and to introduce us to course tutors and other students on our particular course. I stayed in The grange in York and it was a nice place to spend my first year. We were well looked after maintenance and security were on hand whenever we needed. The flats themselves were lovely and a great place to stay. There are plenty of useful facilities at YSJ . The library space is very useful with lots of resources a great place to study and work. The students union is a great space to socialise and I always feel comfortable whenever I visit with friends. My course in particular is a mixture of written and practical work so it's nice to have a variety of task all of a different nature in each session we partake in. York is a very popular city and there's always something to do. It really makes you feel at home walking into town and experiencing the social life of the city. My fiends and I always have a great time wether that's on a shopping trip or when we decide to venture out for a few drinks

This experience has been amazing. The people are great, the locals are friendly and the university is like a small village: you get the best of both studying in a city and the close knit community of a smaller university. You can really tell the staff genuinely care about your study and welfare, from lecturers to cleaners, everyone makes your time here pleasant.

Come here if you want a small university

(4.8)·By john y·Agriculture· Oct 2018
It was lovely being in a small class, as all of the teachers were incredible and got to know all of us quite well. The teachers were clearly passionate about what they do, as they were always talking about their research and made classes really interesting. Both halls and the campus were so small and friendly - you honestly couldn't walk from one side to the other without seeing people you knew!! We were also right next to York minster, so I can't even explain how beautiful the city was.

Freshers week was well organised plenty to do and felt very welcoming on campus There is a wide range of accommodation suitable for different budgets and needs and it's all very close to university and the town centre Everything is very up to date and modern, students union always has events on I love my course, the cohort of students is small which makes it more of a personal experience and the staff are extremely knowledgable and helpful The city has a good atmosphere it's busy and full of students and tourists. There's plenty of bars, restaurants and shops

Freshers week at York St John was well organised by the Student Union. There was an event on every day, and the club bar crawl was great to get to know the city and get to know every one else in first year. There was a lot of choice of accommodation. All of them were in the city which was great for getting to Uni, and all of them were clean and well kept. The library was modern and well suited to a lot of students. There was a silent floor which was great for getting work done, and their collection of books and research papers was particularly useful. The classrooms were always clean and had great layouts for teaching. The sports facilities were fantastic. The course was in depth and covered every area of the subject. The lectures were interesting and engaging, and the lecturers were always keen to help if you were struggling. With the Uni and accommodation being in the city, everything was walking distance. Although there weren't many clubs, there were so many students in the city that there was a great atmosphere for nights out.

It was good, I found it a lot of fun and great activities of getting to know people Very modern and clean, the halls are great for social parties The library is my favourite, so peaceful I feel I am in my own bubble The tutors were definitely the most important and they are really helpful and friendly to go to for things other than the course, the course it's self is so interesting It's really good especially before COVID, it provides for quiet drinks, night drinks, casual, fancy
