Gastroenterology PhD

Our PhD/MPhil Gastroenterology programme enables you to undertake a research project that will improve understanding of Gastroenterology.<br/><br/>Gastroenterology is the study of disorders of the digestive system. Gastrointestinal and liver diseases are common, and have a major impact on health and wellbeing across the life course.<br/><br/>Gastroenterology research at The University of Manchester extends from understanding basic gut physiology and the mechanisms of disease, through to investigation and treatment.<br/><br/>Our work spans the spectrum from cellular and molecular studies, animal models of disease and whole human physiology to clinical studies and trials, and health service research.<br/><br/>Examples of current research activities include:<br/><br/><br/>- neurogastroenterology and the brain-gut axis<br/><br/><br/>- inflammatory bowel disease<br/><br/><br/>- liver disease<br/><br/><br/>- irritable bowel syndrome and other functional disorders<br/><br/><br/>- clinical nutrition and intestinal failure<br/><br/><br/>- gastrointestinal surgery<br/><br/><br/>- Barretts oesophagus and oesophageal cancer<br/><br/><br/>- mucosal immunology<br/><br/><br/>- the gut microbiota<br/><br/><br/>- gut endocrinology<br/><br/><br/>- appetite and satiety in health and disease<br/>
