Automotive Engineering with Electric Propulsion MSc

Specialise in advanced propulsion systems and develop the skills to make an impact on the future of vehicle engineering.

Our master’s takes your automotive engineering knowledge to the next level. It focuses on advanced propulsion systems and related vehicle design challenges to prepare you for working in a dynamic and changing industry. You’ll develop systems-thinking approaches to understand the breadth of challenges faced in the sector such as moral, ethical and sustainability. A mix of theory and technical learning allows you to use your analytical skills, innovation and creativity.

We'll set a topical automotive theme at the start of the course that will inform your studies. This brings the content of subject-based units to life, as well as reflecting professional industry practice. It also gives you the benefit of a personalised learning pathway.

To help prepare you to work in an increasingly digital-based industry, you’ll develop specialist skills in modelling, testing and product development. And you’ll learn how simulation and testing go hand-in-hand to enable rapid product development cycles that help us to achieve zero-impact mobility.

Throughout your degree, you'll collaborate on group projects with students across our suite of automotive courses. You’ll also tackle a real engineering technical challenge with an industrial mentor on our industry-linked research project. Your projects align to the UN's sustainable development goals, so that your learning experience is relevant to the ongoing developments and future of the automotive sector.

Learn from experts in the field
You’ll learn from academics active in researching the latest in automotive engineering. They transfer this research knowledge to your learning experience so you'll get the benefit of their expertise. We also have good links with industry around the world, and invite guest speakers to share their knowledge and experience with you.

Use specialist facilities
Throughout the course, you'll attend laboratory sessions run on our bespoke facilities that demonstrate the principles of current and future vehicles. To support your research project activities, you'll be able to draw on the staff and facilities of our Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS).

From course to career
Our students go on to work in engineering and specialist technical roles in the automotive industry. They are likely to work in roles that use skills in product design, development and innovation. These can be found at vehicle manufacturers, tier 1 suppliers, SMEs and consultancies.

Our past graduates have gained employment in roles including Component Engineer, SQD Engineer, Battery Cooling Component Engineer, and Control Systems Engineer. They have worked at companies such as AVL, JLR, McLaren Automotive and Rolls-Royce.
