French and Portuguese MA (Hons)

This flexible joint honours programme enables you to study two complementary European languages in their global cultural contexts.<br/><br/>Both languages are among the 10 most widely spoken in the world, opening up career opportunities in Europe, Africa and the Americas.<br/><br/>Most of our graduates started as complete beginners in Portuguese. Through intensive language study, including a year abroad, you will have the opportunity to acquire the same level of spoken and written Portuguese as you gain in French.<br/><br/>In addition to your language classes, you will explore aspects of French-speaking (Francophone) and Portuguese-speaking (Lusophone) culture. You can, for example, opt to study Spanish or Basque as part of your programme.<br/><br/>When you graduate, you will have the combination of broad cultural education in the arts and humanities, and specialist knowledge of two major languages, valued by employers worldwide.<br/><br/><strong>How long it takes to complete this degree programme</strong><br/><br/>This programme is studied over 4 years, including a year abroad. This enables us to build choice and flexibility into your studies, giving you time to explore options, find what you like and build your skills.<br/><br/>Your first two years will be your pre-honours years. They will give you a good grounding in your subjects. In addition to studying core courses, you will broaden your education and skill set by choosing option courses. This may enable you to change the focus of your programme.<br/><br/>Your final two years will be your honours years. You will spend Year 3 abroad, gaining a lived experience of Francophone and Lusophone cultures.
