Film & Television Studies/History MA (Hons)

This degree programme studies cinema and television as major forces of enjoyment and knowledge within modern culture. The study of history is the study of change and continuity in human society through time. Glasgow offers a wide-ranging programme from medieval to modern times. Our teaching draws on research expertise in Scottish, British, European, US and global history; slavery studies; gender history; and war, intelligence and genocide studies. <br/><br/><strong>Why study this course at the University of Glasgow?</strong> <br/><br/>The lecturers in Film & Television Studies at Glasgow are leading researchers in their field, and they bring this expertise into their teaching. We have strong connections with Glasgow’s creative and cultural organisations, representatives of which contribute to our programme (eg talks from policymakers and screen practitioners on our core course Media & Cultural Policy). We offer a broad range of courses ranging from medieval to modern times and across the globe. We provide small-group teaching, a variety of assessments (including real-world tasks like policy papers and blogs) and one-to-one feedback tutorials. We host leading research centres in gender history, war studies, slavery studies, American studies and Scottish & Celtic studies. <br/><br/><strong>Career Prospects?</strong> <br/><br/>This programme is a valuable preparation for careers in various aspects of the media, arts and cultural industries as well as for non-media-related careers (eg teaching, public relations). Immediate job destinations for recent graduates include production coordinator for BBC Studios, PR assistant for a creative communications agency and diversity standards’ analyst for the British Film Institute. Older graduates have gone on to establish successful careers as TV producers, arts administrators, educators and leaders within non-profit organisations.
