In a world marked by political instability, conflict and efforts to uncover the truth behind atrocities, investigating genocide and mass violence is more important than ever.
This unique, 100% online MA explores how forensic archaeology can contribute to understanding these events. Using forensic techniques to locate, gather and document evidence, forensic archaeologists work to support justice and humanitarian initiatives worldwide.
You will examine the cultural, political, religious, legal, and humanitarian dimensions of genocide and mass violence, engaging with case studies, ethical considerations and diverse evidence sources such as survivor testimonies, aerial imagery, and site data. Your learning culminates with an impactful research dissertation that integrates your analytical and practical skills.
A strong emphasis is placed on practical based learning. A virtual fieldwork module allows you to apply your knowledge by assessing the ethics of investigative work and analysing real-world forensic data. Working remotely, you’ll assist professional forensic archaeologists across all stages of an investigation from resource management and project planning to data interpretation and reporting.
You will gain experience in data collection methods including archive research, eye-witness accounts and media reports, historical and contemporary imagery, site-based landscape assessment and mapping. In addition, you will learn about the different techniques which can be used to gather site evidence including geophysical surveys, remote sensing and excavation.
By the end of the course, you will be equipped to communicate findings responsibly, work ethically with affected communities and approach challenging investigations with professionalism and cultural awareness.
