Modern Languages and Culture Studies PhD

Are you interested in how modern languages shape our understanding and experiences in the world? Do you have a particular intercultural topic you would like to research?<br/><br/>We offer expert supervision in a variety of subjects, allowing you to focus on an area of your choice within your discipline. Follow your intercultural research interests to a deeper level in a department ranked 6th nationally in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021.<br/><br/>Having completed a masters degree and agreed your research topic with a supervisor, you will continue your research with a PhD exploring themes from our wide field of specialisms. <br/><br/>We have particular strengths in the cultural contexts of:<br/><br/><br/>- French and Francophone studies<br/><br/><br/>- Hispanic and Lusophone studies<br/><br/><br/>- Russian and Slavonic studies<br/><br/><br/>- German studies<br/><br/><br/>- Chinese studies<br/><br/><br/>We also welcome projects involving film, TV and media studies.<br/><br/>We have a very active and dynamic research community where students and academics work on projects across many disciplines.
