Course description
Our one-year MSc Chemistry course combines advanced taught modules with a substantial independent research project. You can choose from a wide range of modules across organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry, allowing you to tailor the programme to your interests and career goals.
Whether you want to build on the areas you enjoyed most during your undergraduate studies or develop expertise in new fields, you can choose from taught modules on topics including catalysis, chemistry of light, technologies for sustainability, theoretical chemistry and materials chemistry.
A major part of your degree is a research project. You'll undertake your project within one of our world-class research groups, working under the supervision of an expert in the field.
Our students undertake research projects spanning many areas of modern chemistry. Recent projects have explored topics ranging from sustainable energy and catalysis to computational chemistry and advanced materials, including:
* Synthesis of transition metal-based catalysts on nickel foam for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline water electrolysis
* Investigating the role of water molecules in the liquid exfoliation of halogen bonded nanosheets using density functional theory
* Preparation and characterisation by XRD of zeolites for sugar isomerization
* Throughout your degree, you'll develop advanced knowledge alongside practical and analytical skills. You’ll receive specialist training in our state-of-the-art research facilities, critically evaluate research literature, analyse data, and communicate scientific findings effectively in both written and oral formats.
The broad scientific knowledge and practical experience gained through our MSc Chemistry course will prepare you for a wide range of careers. Whether you choose to pursue a career in research or apply your expertise in sectors such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods, data science or consulting, you'll graduate with the knowledge and skills to take the next step in your career.
