Master of Research MRes

The Master of Research (M.Res.) is a postgraduate research degree, which provides students with the opportunity to design and undertake a discrete research project, either ‘by practice’ or ‘by Thesis’. The programme is offered at GSA’s Campus in Glasgow, GSA Highlands & Islands in addition to a Low Residency (Blended) mode of study delivered both online and on campus. Students will undertake design-led research in contextually-located projects or aligned to key research thematics. The Master of Research prepares students for doctoral study and offers the potential for eligible students to apply to articulate to a PhD at Year 2 (FT). It is available full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 years). The Master of Research provides tailored postgraduate research training utilising established design-led innovation research methods, approaches and techniques delivered in week-long seasonal schools: winter; spring and autumn. Alongside the research training, you are assigned a dedicated supervisory team. The Master of Research is suited to students who wish a dedicated space to continue a research project or to creative practitioners who wish to develop their research practice in a specific context. Your creative practice is the focus of the iterative research approach and is a major aspect of its experiential nature. This involves exploring creative practice and processes through critical inquiry: making, reading, writing, thinking, discussion and reflection. Research outputs are expected to reflect creative research and engagement, which recognise the importance of practice-based research, knowledge exchange and design-led innovation as core research development activities. It is anticipated that students will take an active part in developing the GSA postgraduate culture through their shared research interests.
