This flexible joint honours programme gives you the opportunity to study two different European languages in their diverse cultural contexts.<br/><br/>With a long history of cultural achievement, migration and diaspora, German and Portuguese are your gateway to a great many countries and cultures in Europe, South America and Africa.<br/><br/>Most of our graduates started as complete beginners in Portuguese. You can start your German language learning at a beginner or more advanced level.<br/><br/>Through intensive language study, including a year abroad, you will have the opportunity to acquire the same level of spoken and written language skills in both German and Portuguese.<br/><br/>In addition to your language classes, you will explore aspects of German-language and Portuguese-speaking (Lusophone) cultures. In Years 1 and 2, as well as your core subjects, you will choose option courses from a wide range of disciplines. You will specialise as you progress through your honours years, choosing from a range of courses that match your own interests, expertise and employability needs.<br/><br/>When you graduate, you will have the combination of a broad cultural education in the arts and humanities, and specialist knowledge of two widely-used languages, valued by employers worldwide.<br/><br/><strong>How long it takes to complete this degree programme</strong><br/><br/>This programme is studied over 4 years, including a year abroad. This enables us to build choice and flexibility into your studies, giving you time to explore options, find what you like and build your skills.<br/><br/>Your first two years will be your pre-honours years. They will give you a good grounding in your subjects. In addition to studying core courses, you will broaden your education and skill set by choosing option courses. This may enable you to change the focus of your programme.<br/><br/>Your final two years will be your honours years. You will spend Year 3 abroad, dividing your time between a country in which German is spoken and one in which Portuguese is spoken.
