Develop your transferable skills and career goals as an environmental professional.<br/><br/><br/>- Develop the core knowledge and competencies you’ll need to work in the environment sector.<br/><br/><br/>- Critically assess the theoretical basis for modern environmental policies and practice worldwide. <br/><br/><br/>- Design your own course within the wildlife & landscape management or international resource management routes.<br/><br/><br/>- Learn from staff with extensive research and professional experience. <br/><br/><br/>You’ll study a course accredited by the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). We’ll introduce you to environmental experts and you’ll have the chance to work on live projects for real clients. You’ll tailor your studies to your own career goals, specialising in ecology & conservation or international resource management.<br/><br/>**How You Learn** <br/><br/>All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.<br/><br/>We provide a supportive, inclusive and challenging learning experience – helping you develop as a self-directed learner with a long-lasting passion for environmental management. You’ll be introduced to key theories and current debates through lectures from leading authorities. You’ll experience site visits to explore key concepts and issues. Instead of exams, you’ll be assessed on the application of skills and knowledge – evidenced through your coursework. <br/><br/>You’ll also engage in formative exercises, group discussions and critical analyses of current environmental issues and case studies. <br/><br/>You learn through: <br/><br/><br/>- lectures and seminars<br/><br/><br/>- guest lectures<br/><br/><br/>- individual and group exercises<br/><br/><br/>- case studies<br/><br/><br/>- field visits<br/><br/><br/>- coursework<br/><br/><br/>**Applied learning**<br/><br/>Live projects: <br/><br/>You’ll complete a major independent research project, which you’ll design on a subject of your choice under the expert supervision of an academic. Projects are often aligned with current research activities undertaken by our staff – in collaboration with a wide range of partners, including local government, the Environment Agency, industry and conservation organisations.<br/><br/>You may also be able to work in a small group to complete a live consultancy project for one of our partner organisations – who act as a real-life client for your work.<br/><br/>Field trips: <br/><br/>We use our university campus, Sheffield city centre, the surrounding region and the neighbouring Peak District National Park as live study sites on many of our modules. In these locations, you’ll see examples of the principles and practice techniques covered in the course. <br/><br/>Recent visits have included habitat management in the Peak District and lowland peat bogs, ecological survey in local farmland, sustainable housing design, and innovative waste management practices in Sheffield. Where possible these visits involve the external professionals responsible for the site or the process in question.<br/><br/>Networking opportunities:<br/><br/>You’ll benefit from our extensive network of leading experts and organisations. We’ll encourage you to engage with our contacts, both on the course and through extra-curricular activities. By working with them you can explore the different roles within the environmental sector. <br/><br/>You’ll also draw on the university services that support graduate employability and enterprise – including specialist careers advice to help you launch your career.
