Mathematics BSc (Hons)

Our mathematics courses give you the chance to become highly numerate and gain excellent training in logical thought. Mathematicians are not satisfied with an observation until they have proved it to be true. By learning mathematics and statistics at Birkbeck, you learn to construct reasoned, structured arguments. These tools of analysis, whether it be modelling situations with appropriate equations or using statistics to analyse data sets and test hypotheses, have countless applications in the real world.<br/><br/>**BSc Mathematics**: our BSc Mathematics provides you with a broad education in mathematical sciences and their modern applications to commerce and the natural and social sciences, such as:<br/><br/><br/>- game theory<br/><br/><br/>- data science<br/><br/><br/>- cryptography<br/><br/><br/>- the mathematics of networks.<br/><br/><br/>This mathematics degree covers theoretical aspects of the subject as well as methods and modelling techniques. You will develop an understanding of a range of mathematical skills, together with the abstract background to help you make sense of this material.<br/><br/>Birkbecks BSc Mathematics course has a flexible structure enabling you to follow your interests, choosing option modules from other departments if you wish. For instance, you can choose option modules that allow you to combine mathematics with accounting, economics or management in your degree to graduate with a:<br/><br/><br/>- BSc Mathematics with Accounting<br/><br/><br/>- BSc Mathematics with Economics<br/><br/><br/>- BSc Mathematics with Management<br/><br/><br/>**Diploma or Certificate of Higher Education in Mathematics**: with classes on just two evenings a week, these flexible courses provide you with an introduction to university-level mathematics that is less intensive and ideal if you are not yet ready to commit to a full BSc Mathematics.<br/><br/>You will:<br/><br/><br/>- develop your knowledge and understanding of mathematical and statistical techniques in the natural and social sciences<br/><br/><br/>- learn how to follow and construct mathematical arguments and solve problems logically and analytically<br/><br/><br/>- increase your ability to present, analyse and interpret data<br/><br/><br/>- improve your quantitative and computing skills.<br/><br/><br/>These courses will not only expand your general knowledge of mathematics, but will also enable you to explore the areas that interest you the most.<br/><br/>**This course has an evening timetable with lectures, seminars and classes taking place in the evening.** <br/><br/>**Highlights**<br/><br/><br/>- In the 2023 National Student Survey, Birkbeck was ranked the top university in the UK for Mathematical Sciences in four of the eight categories, including Teaching on my Course, Assessment and Feedback and Academic Support. <br/><br/><br/>- We have an excellent reputation for the quality of our academic research and teaching.
